{"id":90614,"date":"2021-03-18T11:21:59","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T11:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=90614"},"modified":"2021-03-18T11:21:59","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T11:21:59","slug":"decarbonise-industry-south-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/decarbonise-industry-south-wales\/90614\/","title":{"rendered":"Next phase of South Wales decarbonisation project receives funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) deployment project, led by Costain, has been granted phase two funding of nearly \u00a320m<\/h2>\n<p>Phase Two of the project involves engineering studies to explore the routes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/construction-decarbonisation\/86101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decarbonisation<\/a>, including the use and production of a hydrogen supply, carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) and CO<sub>2<\/sub> shipping from South Wales. This would be the first CO<sub>2<\/sub> shipping industry in the whole of the UK and would create an entirely new industry for the region.<\/p>\n<h3>The scheme is aligned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/green-industrial-revolution\/85465\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">government\u2019s ten-point plan<\/a> for a green industrial revolution, and will include the engineering studies into:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The production and distribution of hydrogen from both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/procurement-of-renewable-energy\/79205\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renewable energy<\/a> and imported LNG which is distributed by repurposing the existing gas network<\/li>\n<li>Cleaner electricity production using carbon capture and\/or hydrogen-rich natural gas<\/li>\n<li>Industrial carbon capture, usage, and storage technologies along the South Wales coast as well as the transportation and shipping of CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/li>\n<li>Large industry decarbonisation through fuel switching (substituting one energy source for a greener, cleaner alternative), process efficiencies and the production of cleaner transportation fuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project is supported by a range of partner organisations from the industrial, academic, law, public and private sectors working across the region to create the world\u2019s first net-zero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/embodied-carbon-difficult\/66692\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emissions industrial zone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as contributing to the UK\u2019s carbon reduction commitment, the project will enhance the UK\u2019s ability to locally manufacture low or net-zero carbon cement and steel products, helping to drive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/industrial-decarbonisation-strategy\/90507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low carbon future of UK construction<\/a> and other sectors.<\/p>\n<h3>Creating a low-carbon industrial sector<\/h3>\n<p>Dr Chris Williams, head of industrial decarbonisation, Industry Wales, said: \u201cOur ambition in SWIC is to create a world-leading truly sustainable cluster, so this deployment project, led by Costain and part funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovate UK<\/a>, will form an important step for us to realise that ambition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of our industries faces a transformational change to reach net-zero.
