{"id":90859,"date":"2021-03-23T10:24:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T10:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=90859"},"modified":"2021-03-23T10:24:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T10:24:01","slug":"west-burton-a-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/west-burton-a-power-station\/90859\/","title":{"rendered":"West Burton A power station to close down"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EDF<\/a> has decided to close its doors at West Burton A power station, its sole remaining coal-fired power station, in September 2022<\/h2>\n<p>The station has a skilled and experienced workforce who will be supported throughout the process, with consultation beginning soon.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 18 months, two of the four 500MW <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/government-overrules-block-on-power-station-project\/64376\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coal units<\/a> will be available purely to meet capacity market commitments, in order to assist with security of supply.<\/p>\n<p>EDF has worked closely with the three unions \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GMB<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prospect<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unite<\/a> to prepare for the future of West Burton A.<\/p>\n<p>This has included discussing individuals\u2019 future aspirations and identifying personal development to help people extend their careers after closure.<\/p>\n<h3>A &#8216;key year&#8217; for UK leadership on climate change<\/h3>\n<p>The full-time union officers, said: \u201cToday\u2019s announcement brings welcome certainty to the dedicated West Burton A workforce about the future of the station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Government policy to close all UK coal generation by 2024 we knew it had a limited future so we have been working alongside EDF to understand the implications for West Burton A and to prepare colleagues for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing the date of closure allows people to make plans.
