{"id":91330,"date":"2021-03-31T11:20:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T10:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=91330"},"modified":"2023-06-15T09:45:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T08:45:07","slug":"scia-structural-engineering-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction\/bim-news\/scia-structural-engineering-2\/91330\/","title":{"rendered":"Structural engineering software assists the design of M\u00f6bius towers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scia.net\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCIA Engineer\u2019s<\/a> structural engineering software analyses the global stability of the M\u00f6bius towers in Brussels, Belgium<\/h2>\n<p>In this case study,\u00a0SCIA Engineer\u00a0reveals how its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/stakeholders\/scia-europes-n1-structural-engineering-software\/87184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">structural engineering software<\/a> made modelling of the\u00a0M\u00f6bius towers\u2019 structure very practical.<\/p>\n<p>The M\u00f6bius towers distinguish themselves from their angular neighbour in the\u00a0Brussels North District by their completely elliptical shape.<\/p>\n<p>The 19 (Tower I)\u00a0and 23 (Tower II) floors above the ground, measuring 73m and 98m respectively,\u00a0offer nearly 62,000 m\u00b2 of office space.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a 2-level basement provides\u00a0300 parking spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The towers are built on the foundation slab of a former construction, which\u00a0resulted in a limited construction height. Therefore, a flat slab was chosen as a\u00a0solution, with locally integrated steel beams transferring smaller column loads\u00a0to the parking grid.<\/p>\n<p>The office floors are made with hollow-core slabs and in-situ casts flat slabs. For the frame, prefabricated beams and columns in high strength concrete are used. A 3-level high steel structure on the top provides space for technical rooms.<\/p>\n<h3>SCIA\u2019s software in use<\/h3>\n<p>In this project, SCIA Engineer was used for the analysis of global stability, for the calculation of deformation of the tower taking into account the cracked lintel shear beams, for the check of wind comfort and generally as a design tool providing a reference model for load takedown.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/scia-bim-workflow\/89462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIM workflow<\/a>, the derived\u00a0forces were used for the detailed design.<\/p>\n<p>The Revit link made modelling of the steel structure very practical.
