{"id":91577,"date":"2021-04-07T14:24:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T13:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=91577"},"modified":"2023-06-14T17:13:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T16:13:16","slug":"structural-design-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction\/bim-news\/structural-design-tool\/91577\/","title":{"rendered":"SCIA\u2019s design tool analyses the Markthal\u2019s complete structure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scia.net\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCIA Engineer\u2019s<\/a> structural analysis and design tool investigates and engineers the complete structure\u00a0of the Markthal in the centre of Rotterdam<\/h2>\n<p>In this case study,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/sh-scia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCIA Engineer<\/a> reveals how its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/structural-analysis-software-2\/91428\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">structural analysis<\/a> and design tool assisted the optimisation of the Markthal.<\/p>\n<p>The Markthal in the centre of Rotterdam is a unique project in many\u00a0ways. It\u2019s the first covered market hall in the Netherlands, enveloped in\u00a0apartments and enclosed by cable net facades at the front and back. The\u00a0top apartments form the keystone of the market hall, spanning 36m and\u00a0carried by concrete walls.<\/p>\n<p>The project has a footprint of ~120 x 90m and stands 40m tall. Underneath the building, a 4-storey deep underground car park has been created. The building\u2019s foundations are a sand layer on top of a soft clay layer at a depth of around 30 m.<\/p>\n<h3>Optimising the superstructure<\/h3>\n<p>SCIA Engineer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/stakeholders\/scia-structural-engineering-software\/87184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">structural engineering software<\/a> helped investigate and engineer the complete structure with cost optimisation as the driving force for project feasibility \u2013 the stability of the superstructure, the interaction between soil, foundations, substructure, superstructure and the behaviour of the cable net facades.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest floor of the substructure was optimised to be as thin as\u00a0possible, while retaining up to 12m of water pressure and withstanding\u00a0settlement due to the soft clay layer. The superstructure was monolithically\u00a0integrated in order to avoid vulnerable dilatations. The cable net facades\u00a0were designed taking into account the non-linear behaviour of both\u00a0concrete structure and cables (deformation determined forces) to reduce\u00a0construction time and
