{"id":91776,"date":"2021-04-12T13:54:17","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T12:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=91776"},"modified":"2021-04-12T13:54:17","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T12:54:17","slug":"southampton-airport-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/southampton-airport-extension\/91776\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans approved for Southampton Airport extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastleigh.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eastleigh Borough Council<\/a> has approved controversial plans to extend Southampton\u2019s airport runway<\/h2>\n<p>The council voted 22 to 13 to approve the plans from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southamptonairport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southampton Airport<\/a> to extend its runway.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors listened to an extensive number of representations from local people, councillors and organisations, both for and against the runway extension, together with evidence from a range of specialists, as well as deliberating a detailed report.<\/p>\n<p>Following a lengthy, extensive and robust debate the council made the decision to approve the Southampton Airport extension.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to permit the application is subject to a range of conditions and the completion of a Section 106 legal agreement. The Section 106 legal agreement addresses important issues arising during the construction and operational phases of the development, including environmental air quality and noise issues, health, transport and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/construction-ecological-footprint\/88192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ecological issues<\/a>, together with a Carbon Strategy to reduce emissions from the airport\u2019s own operations, and a plan to encourage the employment of local residents.<\/p>\n<h3>The planning application covers:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A 164m extension at the northern end of the runway, within existing airport boundaries<\/li>\n<li>An associated blast screen adjacent to the runway<\/li>\n<li>Up to an additional 600 car parking spaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u2018Safeguarding the future of the airport\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Steve Szalay, operations director at Southampton Airport, said: \u201cThis is the news we have been hoping for and working so hard to achieve. By listening to the overwhelming public and business support, as well as the planning officer\u2019s recommendation to approve, the councillors have safeguarded the future of the airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision also ensures we are well placed to provide employment and support the region as we seek to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-post-pandemic\/89397\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recover post-pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about our future. This positive decision allows us to further develop our plans, play a full part in the Solent Freeport and deliver on our commitments set out within the planning application, which will further enrich our neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to everyone who has engaged with the consultations and shared their thoughts and opinions. We listened and reflected your feedback within our plans. You have helped shape the future of Southampton Airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate that some of our neighbours have concerns regarding noise and the environment.
