{"id":92058,"date":"2021-04-16T11:20:20","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T10:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=92058"},"modified":"2021-04-16T11:47:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T10:47:03","slug":"chesters-new-drain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/chesters-new-drain\/92058\/","title":{"rendered":"Vinci starts tunnelling work on Chester\u2019s new drain"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Underground tunnelling has started on the surface water drain through Chester city centre, the new drain will run south along St. Martin\u2019s Way, Nicholas Street, Grosvenor Road and Castle Drive<\/h2>\n<p>The tunnel is being installed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinciconstruction.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VINCI Construction UK<\/a> on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheshire West and Chester Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel will be almost 1km in length, 1.2m in diameter and require 9 access shafts spaced along the route, each 7m wide and 12m deep.<\/p>\n<p>The new drain will result in significant environmental protections and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>It will reduce flooding and drain bursts in the city centre; reduce the volume of water requiring sewage treatment; help cut energy use; and reduce untreated sewage discharges into the river during heavy rainfall when the current network is already at capacity.<\/p>\n<p>A closed slurry system allows the excavated rock to be brought to the surface separation plant and recycles the water used in the cutting process.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tunnel-boring-machine\/86070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tunnel boring machine<\/a> moves forward along the route, sections of the new drain are lowered down the shaft and pushed along the tunnel behind the tunnel boring machine to form a continuous watertight drain.<\/p>\n<p>Once the tunnel boring machine reaches the receiving shaft it is recovered, and the process starts again to excavate the next drain section and will end and at an outfall on the River Dee.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the new drain is currently expected to be completed by the end of the year when the Clockwise traffic diversions for the inner ring-road can be lifted, with construction of the Northgate development continuing until summer 2022.<\/p>\n<h3>The biggest project for Chester<\/h3>\n<p>Andrew Lewis, chief executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: \u201cThe new drain is a major future-proof investment in Chester\u2019s recovery from the pandemic, and an essential requirement ahead of our major regeneration schemes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/70m-northgate-scheme\/78080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including the Northgate development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/vinci-chosen-for-chester-northgate\/48477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biggest infrastructure project in Chester<\/a> for decades. We regret that it will result in some traffic disruption and inconvenience to nearby residents and businesses.
