{"id":92546,"date":"2021-04-26T12:30:29","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T11:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=92546"},"modified":"2021-04-26T12:30:29","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T11:30:29","slug":"rmt-staff-tracking-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/rmt-staff-tracking-app\/92546\/","title":{"rendered":"Rail union demands withdrawal of Mitie &#8216;staff tracking app&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmt.org.uk\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rail union RMT<\/a> has demanded the withdrawal of an app that they say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitie.com\/about-mitie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitie<\/a> is attempting to force on staff that tracks their movements<\/h2>\n<p>RMT has condemned the app as the introduction of \u2018Big Brother\u2019 into the workplace and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-projects-covid-19\/75172\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taking legal advice<\/a> while demanding its withdrawal to allow for discussions with the union.<\/p>\n<p>Mitie has introduced the app and a requirement for staff to download it to their own personal phone.<\/p>\n<p>RMT claims the app appears to track the location of members, for example: If a member of staff is \u2018pinned\u2019 on to a security shift and the location does not match the location the company considers correct, the staff member will be prompted to call the control room.<\/p>\n<p>This is similar for those on a cleaning shift, if the location does not match what Mitie consider as correct, then the staff member will be required to take a \u2018live photo\u2019 of themselves at the location, clearly displaying the site building\/logo in the background and send it immediately to management.<\/p>\n<h3>Mitie has proposed to use the app for the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Booking on to a shift<\/li>\n<li>Complete check calls at regular intervals during shifts<\/li>\n<li>Request holiday<\/li>\n<li>See a summary of the shift attended<\/li>\n<li>Leave notes for managers<\/li>\n<li>See upcoming shifts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Serious concerns over privacy<\/h3>\n<p>RMT general secretary, Mick Cash said: \u201cThe issues with this application are extensive and it is truly shocking that the company have proposed this idea without any discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe union has some serious concerns over privacy with the tracking facilities and the downloading of the app to personal property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe app will clearly have an impact on peoples work-life balance and will cause unnecessary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/stress-related-sick-leave\/92130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress at work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRMT&#8217;s national executive committee has considered this matter and has instructed me to seek legal advice on the attempt to bulldoze this threat to workers personal and civil liberties through without any discussion with the union whatsoever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Mitie&#8217;s response:<\/h3>\n<p>A spokesperson at Mitie said: \u201cWe&#8217;re committed to improving the working lives of our colleagues by using the latest technology.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This includes developing solutions, such as our workplace app, to make processes, such as booking and managing shifts, faster and easier for our employees.
