{"id":92722,"date":"2021-04-29T08:47:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T07:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=92722"},"modified":"2021-04-29T08:47:34","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T07:47:34","slug":"housebuilding-protect-biodiversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/housebuilding-protect-biodiversity\/92722\/","title":{"rendered":"How can the housebuilding industry protect biodiversity?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHBC Foundation<\/a> has partnered with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSPB<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrattdevelopments.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barratt Developments<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>to produce guidance on how the housebuilding industry can incorporate green infrastructure into new builds and protect biodiversity<\/h2>\n<p>The new guide launched highlights that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/biodiversity-construction-sites\/92000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biodiversity should be considered<\/a> at the earliest stages of planning new home developments to encourage wildlife and help reverse habitat decline.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change and the decline of wildlife are the great challenges of our time which, combined with Government demands for greatly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-build-housing-quality\/88039\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased housing supply<\/a>, are creating a balancing act that housebuilders and developers must consider in all its aspects.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainability must be a key consideration in housing developments ensuring a positive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-will-cost-nature-too-much\/70152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impact on wildlife<\/a> and the adoption of nature-based solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the focus on sustainable housing in recent years has been in reducing carbon emissions, but the coronavirus pandemic has placed emphasis on caring for local wildlife.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The majority of house buyers say the pandemic has highlighted the need for more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/urban-green-spaces\/72741\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nature-rich green space<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The UK Prime Minister recently said he will make \u201ctackling climate change and biodiversity loss\u201d the government\u2019s \u201cnumber one international priority\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>58% of UK species have declined over the last 50 years,\u00a0and urbanisation is considered one of the key reasons why.<\/p>\n<p>The new report &#8216;Biodiversity in new housing developments: creating wildlife-friendly communities&#8217;
