(NBS) to help developers and owners increase the incorporation of NBS in construction<\/h2>\n<p>The purpose of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukgbc.org\/ukgbc-work\/principles-for-delivering-urban-nature-based-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UKGBC\u2019s latest report<\/a> is to provide a concise overview of practical methods and best practice examples that empower influencers and decision-makers within built environment organisations to increase the use of urban NBS as a means of ensuring climate resilience and enhancing nature.<\/p>\n<p>The report sets out six \u2018principles\u2019 for delivering urban NBS, ranging from strategic inception to considerations of physical and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/environmental-risks-in-construction-projects\/81868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial risk assessment<\/a>, short-term funding, long-term management and future research and innovation needs.<\/p>\n<p>The development and function of the built environment has significant impacts upon both climate and biodiversity, locally and globally, and the pressure for our industry to be part of the solution is accelerating.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsb-tcfd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure<\/a> (TCFD) have led to a growing requirement to measure and mitigate the physical risks to built assets from climate change, such as flooding and overheating.<\/p>\n<p>The forthcoming Environment Bill will legislate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/biodiversity-net-gain-2\/84158\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biodiversity net gain<\/a> on new developments, while communities within our towns and cities are requesting more green space and nature, driven in part by the effects of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Urban nature-based solutions can provide an answer to these demands from finance, business, regulators, and communities, and this is recognised within the themes of this November\u2019s international climate conference, COP26.<\/p>\n<h3>Adapt to a changing climate<\/h3>\n<p>Tom Butcher, head of industry consultancy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Met Office<\/a>, said:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWith UK climate projections highlighting extremes of temperature and rainfall, these are impacts which are likely to be felt most acutely in the built environment, as these areas concentrate the effects of climate change through urban heat islands and heavily modified drainage systems and water courses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese factors place increasingly severe stresses on local communities and infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report shows the value of working with nature as a key ally, helping to address both parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/sixth-carbon-budget\/92244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate challenge by reducing emissions<\/a> from the built environment; increasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/climate-resilient-design\/90047\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resilience of infrastructure<\/a>; and improving the quality of life and environment for local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mathew Frith, director of conservation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlondon.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Wildlife Trust<\/a>, added:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWe welcome this report;
