{"id":92835,"date":"2021-04-30T11:28:02","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T10:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=92835"},"modified":"2021-04-30T11:28:02","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T10:28:02","slug":"second-lift-at-hinkley-point-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/second-lift-at-hinkley-point-c\/92835\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s largest land-based crane makes second lift at Hinkley Point C"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Big Carl lifted the second of three massive containment rings from the bunker it was constructed in at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/energy\/nuclear-new-build-projects\/hinkley-point-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hinkley Point C<\/a> to a lay-down area close by<\/h2>\n<p>Now being prepared for the final lift into the first reactor building, the 17m-tall ring with a diameter of 47m was built 36% faster than the first by teams using the experience gained during the construction of the first ring.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/big-carls-first-big-lift\/69471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prefabricated steel ring<\/a>, which forms part of the reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor, was lifted out of a bunker where it was constructed in factory conditions \u2013 one of the innovations to improve quality on the project.<\/p>\n<p>Prefabrication inside these bunkers reduces the need to work at height or in bad weather and the work can be completed and checked in a controlled setting.<\/p>\n<p>Big Carl will lift more than 500 prefabricated steel and concrete elements weighing up to 1,600 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Big Carl&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/big-carls-first-big-lift\/69471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first lift was a great success<\/a>, engineers at\u00a0Hinkley Point C worked through the night to complete the first big lift.<\/p>\n<p>The lift had been carefully planned to take advantage of a small weather window last night.\u00a0The project is now focused on completing the base of Unit Two in 2020, as planned, 12 months after Unit One.<\/p>\n<h3>Another impressive achievement<\/h3>\n<p>Hinkley Point C managing director, Stuart Crooks, said: \u201cThe first big lift is another impressive achievement and I want to thank the teams who\u2019ve worked so hard to make this possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the second big lift, Stuart added: \u201cOur belief that we can do things better drives innovation at Hinkley Point C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we build the first UK European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) we are learning and improving all the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is leading to improved productivity as we build Hinkley Point C\u2019s twin reactors.
