{"id":92912,"date":"2021-05-04T12:02:24","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T11:02:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=92912"},"modified":"2023-03-11T19:14:31","modified_gmt":"2023-03-11T19:14:31","slug":"pbc-today-editorial-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/pbc-today-editorial-board\/92912\/","title":{"rendered":"PBC Today Editorial Board: How has construction coped with Covid-19?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In March, as we marked a year since Britain first entered lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, PBC Today\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/editorial-board-members-construction-industry-experts\/53063\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Editorial Board<\/a> gathered over Zoom to discuss the impact of a turbulent 12 months for everyone in the sector<\/h2>\n<p>Joining PBC Today\u2019s managing editor Andy Jowett, senior digital editor Stephanie Blundell, digital content editor Elisha Sketchley and head of construction media Glyn Jackson were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brian Berry (CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federation of Master Builders<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Carpenter (CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.structuraltimber.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Structural Timber Association<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Elaine Cooper (CEO communications and relationships manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciob.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chartered Institute of Building<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Rebecca De Cicco (Founder, <a href=\"https:\/\/womeninbim.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in BIM<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Trudi Sully (Impact director for manufacturing, <a href=\"https:\/\/constructioninnovationhub.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Innovation Hub<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Anna Thompson (Head of engagement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local Authority Building Control<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A big thank you to all our board members for giving us their time and insights.<\/p>\n<h3>Rebecca De Cicco<\/h3>\n<p>Much of our work with Women in BIM is a global initiative anyway so we\u2019ve been collaborating with we call them regional leads, who are regional representatives appointed to support our three main drivers, which is to encourage, retain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/women-in-bim-bimentor\/89319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support women in BIM-related careers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve managed to run events virtually and to grow our members. It\u2019s been very positive because I think that level of support was required, on many fronts, for people looking for those networks, looking for that support and looking for people they can talk to about their projects and their work.<\/p>\n<h3>Brian Berry<\/h3>\n<p>I think one of the great things that came out of last year was how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Leadership Council<\/a> pulled the industry together. That has to be a major outcome of this pandemic because, up until then, the CLC did exist but you wouldn\u2019t have known about it and it didn\u2019t really have an effective voice; it didn\u2019t really engage with the industry across the entire spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis brought everyone together. There were daily meetings with everyone from across the construction sector on the taskforce and we were able, I think, to put a strong case to government that we could be a responsible industry.<\/p>\n<h3>Andrew Carpenter<\/h3>\n<p>In terms of priorities, we are following the \u201cbuild, build, build\u201d mantra. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/national-retrofit-strategy\/90401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build back greener<\/a>, so the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/social-housing-net-zero-2\/92604\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero agenda<\/a> obviously is our unique selling point, so that\u2019s absolutely central to what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/build-back-better-council\/87614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build back better<\/a>, which is the quality agenda, so there\u2019s a lot of emphasis on quality and we have something called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.structuraltimber.co.uk\/members\/why-use-an-sta-member\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STA Assure<\/a>, which is our quality compliance assurance scheme, and that has increased membership.<\/p>\n<p>I think we\u2019re all moving in the same direction to raise the bar in terms of quality and assurance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"fwXXnXIGQfQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Editorial Board: How has construction coped with Covid-19?\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fwXXnXIGQfQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Trudi Sully<\/h3>\n<p>Like everybody when things kicked off last year, we were very anxious about how we were going to continue, what we were delivering, how effective we could be under those circumstances with so much uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>We are, I guess, one of the positive stories from last year in that the reaction from the industry and things that happened across wider industries and within government actually really drove support towards us.<\/p>\n<p>Very rapidly last year the pendulum swung to a point where we were having \u201cpull\u201d, so we were having government departments coming to us and saying what\u2019s happening, when are we going to be able to do this, how are we going to be able to do it, who\u2019s involved, and that\u2019s been a really good opportunity for us to get greater leverage and really be able to start quantifying the opportunities for impact and change, which in turn gives the industry more confidence that there is value in the investment and the time taken to collaborate.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Elaine Cooper<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of focus now on the future and how we do construction in a post-pandemic world.<\/p>\n<p>We had our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-post-pandemic\/89397\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adapt &amp; Thrive<\/a> conference, [which] was a proper global audience. We had the five presidents of the five sister professional bodies &#8211; RICS, the RTPI, us, RIBA and ICE &#8211; and one of the things that came out of that was, in terms of adapting and thriving, we have to make sure that we consciously hold on to the good [from the past year]. It would be very easy to let it slip away.<\/p>\n<h3>Anna Thompson<\/h3>\n<p>In building control, we\u2019ve been working with people like the FMB to try and keep the world going. Basically, after the first three or four days, we\u2019d got surveyors back on site making sure that work could carry on and we\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/road-to-digitalisation\/88578\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">embracing digital working<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/office-construction-falls\/85654\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remote working.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been using our existing app, which was for booking site inspections, but also developing a new app for remote site inspections using webcams and things so that surveyors can actually direct a builder to walk round a site and say, right show me what that beam is sitting on and poke around in that insulation, I want to see how thick it is and things like that.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of saying, it\u2019s okay, we\u2019ll just accept photographs, which would be ridiculous, and wouldn\u2019t be a robust way of making sure things meet the Building Regs, we\u2019ve been trying to find ways to do it differently. Remote inspections \u2013 will they carry on after the pandemic is over?
