{"id":93150,"date":"2021-05-07T14:35:59","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T13:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=93150"},"modified":"2021-05-07T14:35:59","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T13:35:59","slug":"mental-health-project-managers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/mental-health-project-managers\/93150\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine in 10 project managers believe work harmed their mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>93% of people managing projects in construction say their mental wellbeing has been negatively impacted by their main project, with 27% strongly agreeing with this statement<\/h2>\n<p>The findings of a survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for Project Management<\/a> (APM), the chartered body for the project profession, with research company <a href=\"https:\/\/censuswide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Censuswide<\/a>, are released ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 (10 \u2013 16 May).<\/p>\n<p>APM\u2019s survey findings highlight the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, revealing that 84% of project practitioners working in construction have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-poor-mental-health\/83794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negatively affected in their ability to do their job<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents who agreed that the pandemic had negatively impacted them cited reduced confidence among investors or stakeholders (38%), important meetings or phone calls being cancelled or postponed (36%) and difficulty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-work-from-home\/73470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adapting to remote working<\/a> (33%) as the main reasons.<\/p>\n<h3>The main causes of negative impact:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>My work-life balance is suffering due to this project \u2013 40%<\/li>\n<li>This project is impacting my home life and personal relationships \u2013 40%<\/li>\n<li>There are unrealistic expectations placed on me by project stakeholders \u2013 39%<\/li>\n<li>There is insufficient opportunity for me to voice concerns to my superiors \u2013 37%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Some positives to mental health and wellbeing<\/h3>\n<p>Most project practitioners in construction (81%) say that their employer has introduced new initiatives during the pandemic to support staff wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>These initiatives include schemes such as mental health first aiders, dedicated wellness days, allocating work time for social online gatherings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/flexible-hours-measures-introduced\/78010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased flexible working<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A third (33%) of construction project professionals say mental health support training for managers has been the most positive organisational change during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Debbie Dore, chief executive of APM, said: \u201cThese continue to be challenging times, and many people in the project profession have been impacted for reasons beyond their control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s essential that project professionals continue to be properly supported so they can deliver positive change for the people, businesses and communities they serve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s encouraging to see that employers in the construction industry are taking the mental health of their employees seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the chartered body for the project profession, APM has implemented and established new ways of working that are showing benefits to both our staff and the stakeholder groups we interact with.
