Mace<\/a> and Dragados<\/a> have secured a \u00a3570m contract to deliver Birmingham\u2019s new city centre HS2 railway station<\/h2>\n

The deal will see Mace Dragados work with HS2 Ltd in two stages to finalise the detailed design and then build the Birmingham railway station<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The station itself will be net zero carbon in operation and adopt the latest eco-friendly design and sustainable technologies.<\/p>\n

It is designed to meet a \u2018BREEAM excellent\u2019 standard to reduce energy usage and materials waste and minimise their impact on the natural environment.<\/p>\n

\u2018The heart of HS2\u2019<\/h3>\n

Mark Thurston, chief executive of HS2 Ltd, said: \u201cBirmingham Curzon Street is right at the heart of the HS2 project<\/a>, providing a fantastic terminus for trains running right into the heart of the city centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe station will play a vital role in the long-term economic future of the West Midlands, creating hundreds of jobs during construction and boosting the region after the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cMace and Dragados have some incredible experience delivering some of the world\u2019s most challenging and exciting infrastructure projects, and I look forward to welcoming them to the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

HS2 minister Andrew Stephenson, commented: \u201cThis is a huge moment for Birmingham and for HS2. The brand new, world class HS2 station at Birmingham Curzon Street will place the city at the beating heart of the new HS2 network.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt marks a major investment in Birmingham\u2019s future as we build back better from Covid-19 \u2013 breathing new life into the city centre, supporting hundreds of new skilled jobs and helping forge better connections across the whole country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andy Street, the mayor of the West Midlands, added: \u201cHS2 is at the heart of my plans to create 100,000 jobs in just two years to help the West Midlands recover from the coronavirus pandemic, and so I am absolutely thrilled by today\u2019s news.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only is this a major shot in the arm for our region\u2019s construction sector that was performing so well pre-Covid, but the building of Curzon Street<\/a> is also set to create hundreds of jobs. That\u2019s local jobs for local people at such a difficult time, and I will ensure we continue to run construction training courses so residents\u00a0can get the skills they need to take on these new roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m also excited to see the commitment from HS2 ltd that the station will be net-zero, helping the West Midlands in its battle against the climate emergency and in our aim to become carbon neutral by 2041.\u201d<\/p>\n
