{"id":93342,"date":"2021-05-13T10:55:34","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T09:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=93342"},"modified":"2021-05-13T10:55:34","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T09:55:34","slug":"hs2-giant-tunnelling-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-giant-tunnelling-machine\/93342\/","title":{"rendered":"Milestone as HS2 launches first giant tunnelling machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2<\/a> launches \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2s-giant-tunnelling-machines\/86369\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florence<\/a>\u2019 \u2013 the first of 10 HS2 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that will dig 64 miles of tunnel on phase one of the new high speed railway<\/h2>\n<p>The launch of the first of ten giant tunnelling machines that will dig 64 miles of tunnels between London and the West Midlands, is just the latest example of how HS2 is securing jobs and helping the UK to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/build-back-better-council\/87614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build back better<\/a> from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Named after nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale \u2013 the TBM will dig the first of a pair of 10 mile long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-tunnel\/90673\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tunnels under the Chiltern hills<\/a> and help to safeguard the woodland and wildlife habitats above ground.<\/p>\n<p>A second machine \u2018Cecilia\u2019 will launch next month to excavate the second tunnel at the South Portal site.<\/p>\n<p>The first two TBMs will be operated by high speed railway\u2019s main works contractor, <a href=\"https:\/\/alignjv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Align<\/a> \u2013\u00a0a\u00a0joint venture formed of three international infrastructure companies: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bouygues-tp.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bouygues Travaux Publics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.srm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Robert McAlpine<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkerfitzpatrick.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VolkerFitzpatrick<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Designed specifically for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-chalk-grassland\/89839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mix of chalk and flints<\/a> under the Chilterns, the two identical TBMs will dig separate tunnels for north and southbound trains.<\/p>\n<p>Each machine operates as a self-contained underground factory &#8211; digging the tunnel, lining it with concrete wall segments and grouting them into place at a speed of around 15 meters a day.<\/p>\n<p>Each tunnel will require 56,000 precision-engineered, fibre-reinforced segments \u2013 which will all be made on site.<\/p>\n<p>A crew of 17 people will operate each TBM, working in shifts to keep the machines running 24\/7.
