{"id":93691,"date":"2021-05-20T11:51:31","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T10:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=93691"},"modified":"2021-05-20T11:52:20","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T10:52:20","slug":"largest-engineering-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/largest-engineering-campus\/93691\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction complete at UK\u2019s largest engineering campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Delivered by a collaborative team of builders, architects and engineers, the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) has been handed over to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Manchester<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Building design was undertaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mecanoo.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mecanoo<\/a> with support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penoyreprasad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penoyre &amp; Prasad<\/a>, with detailed design during the technical and construction stages by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BDP<\/a>, and multidisciplinary engineering services provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The main contractor was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.balfourbeatty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balfour Beatty<\/a> and it was project managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/burofour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buro Four<\/a>, with Buro Happold as the Environmental Sustainability Advisor.<\/p>\n<p>The Manchester Engineering Campus Development will provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/manchester-university-plans-350m-engineering-campus\/20153\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable research facilities<\/a>, alongside flexible and innovative teaching and learning spaces that will enable students to shape their own learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>It will house a community of 8,000 students, researchers, academics and professional services staff. This will be the largest concentration of interdisciplinary engineering expertise in any UK university.<\/p>\n<p>MECD is home to purpose-designed blended lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, student workshops and a range of spaces to support our ambitious outreach and social engagement initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The University is committed to Environmental Sustainability, with MECD being the first project to appoint a dedicated Environmental Sustainability Advisor to develop and drive the University\u2019s comprehensive sustainability targets throughout the project\u2019s life cycle, including a BREEAM Excellent rating, a new active travel hub and green roof.<\/p>\n<p>MECD is part of a research and innovation hub and immediately adjacent to two flagship centres of excellence \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/about\/ngi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Graphene Institute<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royce.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Royce Institute<\/a>, the UK\u2019s national institute for advanced materials research and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Manchester is ranked as the world number one in THE Impact Rankings and this investment will ensure that Manchester continues to be at the forefront of delivering world-class research.<\/p>\n<h3>A critical milestone for the project<\/h3>\n<p>Mark Pearson, Balfour Beatty project director, said: \u201cWe\u2019re extremely pleased to have reached this critical milestone on such an important project \u2013 one that will transform the way in which the University of Manchester educates our future workforce of engineers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the challenges we have faced over the last year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, works have progressed at pace with our expert team achieving final completion ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This
