take over from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wates<\/a> on the Grenfell tower safety and maintenance contract<\/h2>\n<p>The existing contract for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/grenfell-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grenfell Tower<\/a> site expires in July and Deconstruct UK will take over and continue essential safety and maintenance works.<\/p>\n<p>The new contractor, Deconstruct UK has been working at the Grenfell Tower site since 2017 as a specialist subcontractor to the previous principal contractor, Wates Property Services.<\/p>\n<p>The contractor has not been appointed to demolish the tower.<\/p>\n<h3>DUK will be responsible for keeping the tower site safe and secure by:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitoring the tower and the site 24 hours a day<\/li>\n<li>Carrying out planned safety works, including the removal of heavy and damaged items and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/asbestos-guide\/71649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asbestos<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Installing new \u2018props\u2019 (aluminium and steel weight-bearing supports) to supplement those that have been installed since the fire<\/li>\n<li>On-going maintenance work as necessary, to ensure site safety and security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A decision has not yet been made on the future of the tower.<\/p>\n<p>Following important safety advice from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/astrazeneca-structural-engineering\/91507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">structural engineering<\/a> firms, Atkins, and Jacobs, the government has written to the community about a decision on the future of Grenfell Tower.<\/p>\n<p>It is keen to speak to as many bereaved families, survivors and local residents as possible, and hear any questions, concerns or comments before a decision is made.<\/p>\n<p>Meetings are currently taking place for families and individuals to hear from and talk to the MHCLG team and engineering experts advising the government.<\/p>\n<p>If a decision were taken to demolish the tower, the government would procure a specialist contractor to carry out any future works.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ministry-of-housing-communities-and-local-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MHCLG<\/a> spokesperson said:\u202f\u00a0\u201cWe have\u00a0today\u00a0appointed a new principal contractor which will continue routine essential safety and maintenance works at the Grenfell Tower site, as the existing contract will expire in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo final decision on\u00a0the future of Grenfell Tower has\u00a0been taken\u00a0and\u00a0the new\u00a0principal contractor\u00a0will not carry out any deconstruction works\u00a0as part of this contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know how important and sensitive a decision on the future of the tower is and we continue to engage with those most
