{"id":93948,"date":"2021-05-26T09:07:22","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T08:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=93948"},"modified":"2021-05-26T09:07:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T08:07:22","slug":"glass-research-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/glass-research-facility\/93948\/","title":{"rendered":"Green light for \u00a354m glass research facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sthelens.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St Helens Borough Council<\/a> has given the go-ahead to plans for the \u00a354m global glass research and innovation facility at Saints Retail Park<\/h2>\n<p>The planning application was prepared and submitted by developer and landowner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkspace.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Space<\/a>, on behalf of not-for-profit research and technology organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glass-futures.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glass Futures<\/a>, to build the 160,000 sq ft Global Centre of Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>The global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/glass-innovation-facility\/88602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glass research and innovation facility<\/a> will be used to deliver industry and Government-backed R&amp;D projects focused on decarbonising glass production.<\/p>\n<p>It will also provide a platform for industry to test and trial their own commercial ideas on a state-of-the-art line, both collaboratively and individually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bandk.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bowmer + Kirkland<\/a> has been appointed to build the facility following an open procurement process through the North West Construction Hub.<\/p>\n<p>The project delivery is led by Network Space on behalf of an innovative partnership created between Glass Futures, the global glass supply chain, Network Space, St Helens MBC, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and UKRI (UK Research and Innovation).<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Achieving zero carbon glass\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Catherine Chilvers, development director at Network Space, said: &#8220;We are delighted to have successfully secured planning permission for such a high profile and transformational project for St Helens and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/innovation-in-drone-technology\/90966\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Liverpool City Region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consent is another major milestone in transforming the former United Glassworks site into a global hub for research whilst once more positioning St Helens at the forefront of glass innovation and sustainable glass manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team and the partnership that we have formed has worked tirelessly in bringing the concept to life and converting it into a deliverable scheme. We hope to announce further progress in the coming months.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, commented: \u201cI\u2019m committed to reshaping our economy after Covid so that it is cleaner, greener, stronger, and designed around the needs of local people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve invested \u00a39m to help bring Glass Futures to life to help deliver that radical change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlass Futures has the potential to put our region at the forefront of the Green Industrial Revolution and make us a global leader in new technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen complete, this project will help take St Helens proud history in glass making and bring it into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, creating lots of local jobs and drastically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/carbon-emissions-from-buildings\/84234\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cutting carbon emissions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to creating 80 new permanent jobs, the project will lead to much-needed apprenticeships, training and general up-skilling within the glass and similar industrial sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Glass Futures\u2019 chief executive, Richard Katz, added: \u201cToday\u2019s decision is fantastic news.
