{"id":93987,"date":"2021-05-26T13:50:29","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T12:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=93987"},"modified":"2021-05-26T13:50:29","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T12:50:29","slug":"carbon-tech-uk-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/carbon-tech-uk-infrastructure\/93987\/","title":{"rendered":"Arup to explore carbon tech for UK infrastructure schemes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arup<\/a> has been awarded funding to demonstrate the feasibility of using carbon capture technologies within UK infrastructure projects to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions<\/h2>\n<p>Arup in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Costain<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Edinburgh<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newcastle University<\/a>, will explore the use of biochar for storage of carbon within soil and enhanced rock weathering.<\/p>\n<p>The Arup-led team was awarded the funding,\u00a0made available from the government\u2019s \u00a31bn\u00a0Net Zero Innovation Portfolio,\u00a0through submission of a proposal to Phase One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/direct-air-capture-and-other-greenhouse-gas-removal-technologies-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BEIS Direct Air Capture<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/ccc-net-zero-report\/86391\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenhouse Gas Removal technologies<\/a> competition.<\/p>\n<p>While both these technologies have already proved effective for direct capture of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in agriculture settings, this project aims to demonstrate these technologies can be upscaled for application to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/infrastructure-digital-twin\/89988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK infrastructure schemes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The team will assess the challenges and benefits of this technology application and engage with industry stakeholders through consultation. It will also design pilot schemes for demonstration on a live infrastructure project and identify potentially suitable sites.<\/p>\n<p>The project has been funded by the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy<\/a> (BEIS).<\/p>\n<h3>Determined to tackle climate change<\/h3>\n<p>Dan Raynor, associate director at Arup, said:\u00a0\u201cOur team will be focusing on two technologies known to be effective for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/sizewell-c-direct-air-capture\/93891\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">direct carbon capture<\/a>, but which have not previously been applied at scale in an infrastructure setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting opportunity for us to explore how these innovative technologies could be used globally as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/digital-sustainable-built-environment\/84986\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable application in the built environment<\/a> to contribute towards carbon reduction targets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted to have been awarded this funding by BEIS and look forward to delivering this work together with our collaborators, Costain, the University of Edinburgh and Newcastle University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, added: \u201cWe are determined to tackle climate change and make it win-win for both our planet and our economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s major cash boost \u2013 targeted at our most polluting industries &#8211;
