{"id":94097,"date":"2021-05-28T09:55:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T08:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94097"},"modified":"2021-05-28T09:55:37","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T08:55:37","slug":"low-carbon-energy-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/low-carbon-energy-storage\/94097\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers awarded \u00a31.3m to develop low-carbon energy storage system"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Nottingham<\/a> have received \u00a31.3m to develop a novel, low-carbon energy storage system to supply cheap,\u00a0on-demand heat for people living in the UK<\/h2>\n<p>The low-carbon energy storage technology will help to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/decarbonise-uk-construction\/79367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decarbonise\u00a0the buildings<\/a> sector, while also addressing issues of fuel poverty and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to overcome technical challenges that currently limit the capabilities of conventional thermochemical energy storage systems.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, the researchers will investigate social, economic, environmental barriers that prevent the uptake of community-based heat networks in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Once tested and operational, a pilot model of\u00a0the new\u00a0thermochemical energy storage system will be connected to\u00a0a small-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/2020-construction-trends\/69505\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">district heating<\/a> network\u00a0already\u00a0in operation at the Creative Energy Homes complex\u00a0at the\u00a0University of Nottingham.<\/p>\n<p>This test-bed demonstrator, which\u00a0represents about five or six buildings on\u00a0University Park\u00a0campus, will then be evaluated for effectiveness and performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nottingham City Council<\/a> is a key partner on this project. With the City aiming to be carbon neutral by 2028, the council is keen to understand whether the prototype could be adopted on its District Heat Network.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Innovative ways of achieving carbon reduction goals\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Nottingham City Council\u2019s deputy leader and portfolio holder for energy, environment &amp; waste services, councillor Sally Longford, said: \u201cAs a council that\u2019s leading the drive for Nottingham to become carbon neutral by 2028, we\u2019re pleased to be part of this project and keen to explore innovative ways of achieving our carbon reduction goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecarbonisation of heat is a key challenge we need to find solutions for, and we\u2019re interested to find out if this approach being piloted by the University of Nottingham could be applied to our own district heating network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Project lead investigator, professor Jo Darkwa, commented:\u00a0\u201cFrom 2030 individual homes and commissioned buildings won\u2019t be able to use individual gas boilers, so we need\u00a0low carbon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/public-sector-decarbonisation\/93173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zero carbon heating<\/a> systems\u00a0that can\u00a0replace fossil-fuelled systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key alternative\u00a0is district heating systems\u00a0which\u00a0distribute\u00a0hot water into\u00a0multiple\u00a0properties\u00a0via networks of\u00a0communal\u00a0pipes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistrict heating systems are advantageous, because they can use excess\u00a0heat\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a free raw material\u00a0\u2013 from industrial processes or sustainable\u00a0sources such as geothermal\u00a0to\u00a0heat water\u00a0for large numbers of homes. It\u2019s very common in Scandinavia, Germany and China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the variable nature\u00a0and temperatures of\u00a0the low-zero carbon sources, both short-term (daily) and long-term (seasonal), and mismatches between needs and availability of energy, make decarbonisation\u00a0more\u00a0difficult to achieve at\u00a0an\u00a0individual building level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistrict heating systems are ideally placed to provide the infrastructure\u00a0to overcome this issue in urban\u00a0settings, but\u00a0require suitable energy storage facilities that can\u00a0cope with an influx of varying\u00a0source temperatures; commercial waste is a much higher temperature than solar thermal heat, for example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, we have limited and effective ways to store recovered waste heat for later usage,\u201d\u00a0added Professor Darkwa.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018A flexible and smart system\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Professor Darkwa, said:\u00a0\u201cTo maximise\u00a0its\u00a0supply, the new system\u00a0will be able to collect heat from different sources\u00a0and temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u00a0will\u00a0be flexible and smart;\u00a0able to sense the temperature that is being delivered and\u00a0store it\u00a0appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will\u00a0also\u00a0be relatively cheap\u00a0to run compared to conventional systems, which store heat in large water tanks at fixed temperature. At domestic level, it removes the fossil fuel\u00a0cost,\u00a0and the financial burden of\u00a0boiler purchase,\u00a0servicing\u00a0and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur system is decentralised.
