{"id":94279,"date":"2021-06-03T09:22:57","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T08:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94279"},"modified":"2021-06-03T09:22:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-03T08:22:57","slug":"skanska-drones-pilot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/skanska-drones-pilot\/94279\/","title":{"rendered":"Skanska pilots industry drone flights"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skanska<\/a>&#8216;s pilot drones can execute missions in industrial environments, from a central control room, to potentially hundreds of miles away<\/h2>\n<p>The Building team based at the Mindenhurst project, working with their customer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/defence-infrastructure-organisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defence Infrastructure Organisation<\/a> (DIO), were invited by the Operational Efficiency team to take part in initial conversations about partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sees.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sees.ai<\/a>, a technology company.<\/p>\n<p>sees.ai and their consortium partners, including NATS, Vodafone and BAE Systems, have been awarded funding from UK Research and Innovation, as part of the Future Flights Challenge to develop the technology and run a series of remote trials.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/our-work\/our-main-funds\/industrial-strategy-challenge-fund\/future-of-mobility\/future-flight-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future Flight Challenge<\/a> is investing up to \u00a3125m to help advance electric and autonomous flight technologies to unlock new service opportunities and help the UK reach its net-zero target.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, the plan is to use these drone flights to capture, photographs and video in high definition, as well as 360 degrees and UV, thermal and 3D scans.<\/p>\n<p>Trials are also underway on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cementation-skanska-hs2\/93862\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2 London tunnels<\/a> main works contract through the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94283 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska-300x145.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"716\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska-300x145.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska-768x372.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska-696x337.jpeg 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska-610x296.jpeg 610w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Skanska.jpeg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Piloting the drones from a remote location include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Driving down the cost of use, by reducing man-hours and travel, making everyday tasks delivered by drones cost-effective<\/li>\n<li>Providing real-time data, enabling difficult to access snagging and inspection visits, by the right people, from remote locations<\/li>\n<li>Protecting people\u2019s health, safety and wellbeing by removing the need to attend a live construction site<\/li>\n<li>Reducing the number of vehicles travelling to sites, which means a reduction in the amount of carbon produced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A part of the digital transformation journey<\/h3>\n<p>Peter Cater, development manager, said: \u201cWe were invited to carry out these trials because of our use and knowledge of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/the-future-built-environment\/89334\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drone capability<\/a> and we were very excited to be the first company in the construction industry to do this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trials have benefited everyone involved: sees.ai get to test their equipment and remote use of the drones and we get access to accurate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/weather-data-enhance-bem\/76470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">real-time data<\/a> on our construction activities which benefits us and our customer, DIO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProjects like this \u2013 at the forefront of innovation \u2013 go to show what an exciting industry construction is to be involved in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are always looking for innovative ways of working, ways to be more sustainable so we can find better solutions for our customers.
