{"id":94369,"date":"2021-06-04T10:05:24","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T09:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94369"},"modified":"2021-06-04T10:05:24","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T09:05:24","slug":"cancer-centre-cumberland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cancer-centre-cumberland\/94369\/","title":{"rendered":"Building work complete on new cancer centre at Cumberland Infirmary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A project to develop a new cancer centre in north Cumbria is entering the final stages after keys to the building were officially handed over by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graham.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The new centre named the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria has been built on the Cumberland Infirmary site and is a partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncic.nhs.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust<\/a> and Newcastle Hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>This will mean that more people can access care closer to home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/liverpool-cancer-centre\/80688\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improving cancer services<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/mcalpine-cedar-programme\/90199\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patients all over north Cumbria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Services at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care will be run by Newcastle Hospitals, and staff from North Cumbria\u2019s Integrated Care NHS Trust\u2019s oncology services transferred to join the Newcastle Hospitals\u2019 team in April this year.<\/p>\n<p>A turf cutting ceremony in January 2020 officially marked the start of building work which continued at pace and remained on track despite the constraints of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The project has created a modern environment for staff, patients, carers and their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>It also brings all Cumberland Infirmary\u2019s non-surgical oncology services under the same roof so patients will no longer have to receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment in different parts of the hospital.<\/p>\n<h3>The new centre includes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Two linear accelerator radiotherapy machines<\/li>\n<li>A chemotherapy day unit with 15 treatment chairs and three single treatment rooms<\/li>\n<li>A CT scanner suite<\/li>\n<li>Consultation, examination rooms and a small caf\u00e9 area<\/li>\n<li>Multipurpose rooms for complementary therapies and patient support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A reassuring place patients<\/h3>\n<p>Phil Powell, directorate manager for cancer services and clinical haematology at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle-hospitals.nhs.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newcastle Hospitals<\/a>, said: \u201cThe building looks absolutely amazing, and we are sure the environment will be a calming and reassuring place for our patients to receive treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaff have expressed their delight at the light and airy space as well as the state-of-the-art equipment that will be used for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe keys have been formally handed over by the builders and now we have some snagging work to undertake as well as furniture to bring in.
