{"id":94466,"date":"2021-06-09T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T05:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94466"},"modified":"2021-06-08T09:27:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T08:27:25","slug":"construction-industry-new-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-industry-new-workers\/94466\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction industry will need &#8216;216,800 new workers by 2025&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The construction industry has bounced back from the Covid-19 pandemic and should reach 2019 levels of output in 2022, but by 2025, the industry will need to recruit an additional 217,000 new workers just to meet demand<\/h2>\n<p>The CITB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citb.co.uk\/about-citb\/construction-industry-research-reports\/search-our-construction-industry-research-reports\/construction-skills-network-forecasts-2021-2025-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Skills Network<\/a> (CSN) 2021-25 report predicts a growing contribution to come from repair, maintenance and improvement work, as retrofitting existing buildings to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/sixth-carbon-budget\/92244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net-zero emissions targets<\/a> becomes more important.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CSN, most English regions will experience an increase in construction workers by 2025, with East Midlands (1.7%) and West Midlands (1.4%) forecast to lead demand. Scotland (1.4%) and Wales (0.7%) are also predicted to fare well.<\/p>\n<p>The only region forecast to see a slight decline in workforce is the North East (-0.1%).<\/p>\n<p>Major projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/hs2-innovation-accelerator-smes\/94379\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2 are driving growth<\/a> in some regions and infrastructure (5.2% per annum) and private housing (6.7%) should see the healthiest pace of expansion by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of annual average recruitment requirement (ARR), the most in demand trades are forecast to be in wood trades &amp; interior fit-out (5,500 per year), other construction professionals and technical staff (5,150), construction managers (3,600) and electrical installation trades and (3,400).<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a demand for non-construction, office-based professional, technical and IT support staff (7,850).<\/p>\n<p>The commercial sector faces significant near-term risks while the public sectors\u00a0could be impacted by tighter government finances.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the CSN forecasts UK output to grow annually at an average rate of 4.4% across 2021-2025.\u200b<\/p>\n<h3>Opportunities for the industry<\/h3>\n<p>CITB policy director, Steve Radley, said: \u201cIt\u2019s great to see construction coming back so strongly and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/new-jobs-work-on-hs2\/88252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating lots of job opportunities<\/a>.
