{"id":94533,"date":"2021-06-08T15:08:10","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T14:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94533"},"modified":"2021-06-17T09:39:09","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T08:39:09","slug":"supply-chain-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/supply-chain-legislation\/94533\/","title":{"rendered":"Government urged to introduce sustainable supply chain legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A panel of experts who gathered to discuss how the construction industry will meet zero-emissions targets have called on the government to introduce a sustainable supply chain legislation<\/h2>\n<p>Support in the form of legislation and incentives\u00a0around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/mmc-insight\/89574\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modern Methods of Construction<\/a> (MMC) were outlined as the driving factors for real change in the construction industry.\u00a0This legislation must be brought forward in the form of ensuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/building-materials-shortage\/94515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building materials<\/a> that are\u00a0used in construction are renewable and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>Cement contributes 8% to the overall 40% of\u00a0the\u00a0carbon emissions\u00a0in the construction industry. Timber is an obvious renewable alternative that is a regulated building material, with many homes in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/timber-shortages-worsen\/94148\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">constructed with timber frame<\/a>.\u00a080% of new build houses in Scotland are timber frame<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Welsh Government<\/a> have committed to all affordable housing being built with timber frame by next year. The panel was unanimous in agreeing that this is the kind of leadership seen in Wales is what is needed\u00a0across the board.<\/p>\n<p>In a traditionally fragmented industry, the resounding notion in the room was for all sectors within the construction industry to come together to inform a collaborative approach to\u00a0really move\u00a0towards carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>The last 12 months have been a time of reflection for many, with industries across the globe forced to pause and take stock of their impact on the planet. With the government\u2019s net-zero by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-enshrines-new-target-in-law-to-slash-emissions-by-78-by-2035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2035 initiative<\/a>, this reflection has been vital for the construction industry.<\/p>\n<h3>A collaborative approach and integrated supply chain<\/h3>\n<p>Panellist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/testimonials\/andrew-carpenter-sta\/90848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Carpenter<\/a>, chief executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.structuraltimber.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Structural Timber Association<\/a> (STA), said: \u201cThere has never been a better time to\u00a0change how we build our homes in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic has given us time to stop and consider our industry\u2019s impact and\u00a0as the world regains some normality,\u00a0we, as an industry, should\u00a0want to move forward\u00a0rather than simply returning to how we have always done things, as it is clear from the figures that this is devastating the planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two things that will drive this forward\u00a0and two things that will drive the change.
