{"id":94688,"date":"2021-06-14T09:37:18","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T08:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94688"},"modified":"2021-06-14T09:42:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T08:42:25","slug":"floo-defence-scheme-cardiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/floo-defence-scheme-cardiff\/94688\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a325m flood defence scheme planned for Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Plans for the \u00a325m coastal protection scheme, on the banks of the River Rhymney, have been released by Cardiff Council<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/investment-to-tackle-flooding\/79246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flood defence scheme<\/a> designed to cope with a one-in-200-year storm, and rising sea levels caused by climate change, could be built to protect the southeast of Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme has been designed to ensure there is minimal impact on existing river and coastal foreshore habitats.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff Council&#8217;s Cabinet will receive a report on the new plans for the coastal defence scheme at its meeting on 17 June.<\/p>\n<p>If agreed the project will then go out to tender.<\/p>\n<h3>The new flood defence, which could be ready by 2023, will help:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/flood-risk-in-bristol-unveiled\/83501\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manage flood risk<\/a> to just under 1,200 properties<\/li>\n<li>Prevent material from Lamby Way landfill site eroding into the sea<\/li>\n<li>Protect key road infrastructure, a supermarket and the Rover Way Travellers site for the next 100 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The proposals for the new defences include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Rock armour placed on the coastal foreshore on both sides of the river Rhymney<\/li>\n<li>Raised and maintained sea defences along the river Rhymney<\/li>\n<li>Raising of existing coastal defence embankments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Welsh Government<\/a> will pay 85% of the cost of the scheme with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff Council<\/a> making up the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet member for clean streets, recycling and environment, Michael Michael, said: &#8220;The greatest risk to Cardiff right now is flooding and rising sea levels caused by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur flood defences along the foreshore by Rover Way are in a poor condition and only have a short-to-medium-term lifespan, so it&#8217;s really important that action is taken now to safeguard this part of the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The coastal protection scheme will see 100,000 tonnes of rock used on the coastline, with the river bank behind being raised, as well as the embankments next to the highway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteel sheeting will have to be drilled 12 metres into the bedrock of the river to retain the structure of the riverbank and the coastal path will then be built on top of the raised embankment, so that access along the river foreshore is maintained for the public to use.
