{"id":94880,"date":"2021-06-17T09:12:06","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T08:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94880"},"modified":"2023-06-13T16:50:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T15:50:14","slug":"virtual-reality-hs2-old-oak-common","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction\/virtual-reality-hs2-old-oak-common\/94880\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual reality brings HS2 Old Oak Common to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>As part of its innovation programme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2<\/a> is developing virtual reality (VR), eye-tracking and emotion-sensing technology to be used to develop how passengers will navigate their way around the new HS2 station at Old Oak Common<\/h2>\n<p>As part of its innovation programme, HS2 Ltd is working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designbyccd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CCD Design &amp; Ergonomics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WSP<\/a> to develop efficient and stress-free \u201cwayfinding\u201d for the quarter of a million people who will use the new 14-platform super-hub in north-west London each day.<\/p>\n<p>The data collected by CCD will enable HS2 Ltd and station designers to assess and if necessary, refine designs to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/old-oak-common-station\/76436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Old Oak Common<\/a> passengers move smoothly and efficiently around the 100,000 square metre rail interchange station.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing virtual reality headsets fitted with eye-tracking and emotion-sensing technology, three sample groups drawn from members of the travelling public will enter a virtual version of the giant new station.<\/p>\n<p>Once in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/augmented-reality-technology\/88909\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital VR<\/a>, these passengers of the future will be asked to navigate their way around Old Oak Common to reach meeting points, platforms and to change between HS2 and Crossrail services using the signage included in the current design. In addition, the team will dedicate a further session to passengers whose mobility is impaired to explore what further assistance they might need to navigate the station.<\/p>\n<p>Eye-tracking technology fitted to VR headsets will monitor in detail how the eye is drawn around the station\u2019s interior, and whether there are any distractions that might contradict or confuse, all of which could hamper easy and stress-free movement.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits fed back into the design<\/h3>\n<p>HS2 Ltd innovation manager, Heather Donald, said: \u201cThe HS2 super-hub at Old Oak Common is the largest single-build station to be built in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp to quarter of a million passengers will use it to connect between HS2, Great Western and Elizabeth line trains each day, so it is vital that its design is fine-tuned to deliver a stress-free step change improvement in the passenger experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformative and clear signage is a prerequisite to ensuring that people using the station and changing between services can move with intuitive ease through OOC.
