{"id":94896,"date":"2021-06-17T10:28:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T09:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94896"},"modified":"2021-06-18T08:51:34","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T07:51:34","slug":"london-victori-footbridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/london-victori-footbridge\/94896\/","title":{"rendered":"VolkerFitzpatrick replaces London Victoria to Ramsgate footbridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkerhighways.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VolkerHighways<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkerfitzpatrick.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VolkerFitzpatrick<\/a> have replaced an expired pedestrian footbridge over the London Victoria to Ramsgate railway cutting, at Gillingham, Kent<\/h2>\n<p>VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick replaced the footbridge as part of VolkerHighways\u2019 highways infrastructure framework with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medway.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medway Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The original footbridge, which was 31.1m long, 1.9m wide and weighed 23tonnes, was located on the west side of Gillingham train station, spanning the eight-metre deep railway cutting between Chatham and Gillingham train stations.<\/p>\n<p>Preparation works for the project began in early 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/energy-efficient-street-lighting\/81738\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with VolkerHighways working<\/a> in conjunction with Medway Council, VolkerFitzpatrick and additional bridge specialists, to ensure the works were completed to a high standard, on time and within budget.<\/p>\n<p>VolkerHighways was also involved in the planning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/innovative-railway-footbridge\/94838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">design and fabrication of the bridge<\/a>, as well as surveys, bridge inspections and the installation of electrical feeder pillars and duct work.<\/p>\n<p>Works to remove the footbridge started in early April, with VolkerFitzpatrick constructing the new in-situ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/concrete-waterproofing-corrosion\/56054\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reinforced concrete<\/a> foundations, which were located at the rear of the existing bridge foundation supports and constructed during normal daytime working, outside of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail<\/a> boundary.<\/p>\n<p>The new bridge is supported on the new reinforced concrete foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Once the new bridge was installed, VolkerHighways reinstated the footway paving, street lighting columns and street furniture and handed back the site to Medway Council for opening to the public.<\/p>\n<h3>Significant cost savings<\/h3>\n<p>The project was completed a week ahead of the original programme, with significant cost savings and minimal disruption to the local residents and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Taylor, VolkerFitzpatrick\u2019s contracts manager, said: \u201cThis was a very well planned and executed footbridge replacement, involving multiple contractors, that all worked in true collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/facilities-management-safety-contract\/82676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health and safety management<\/a> has been a credit to all those on site, with everyone embracing our behavioural safety programme, Network Rail\u2019s lifesaving rules and other Southern Shield initiatives, to ensure we send everyone home safe at the end of each shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sohail Hussain, VolkerHighways\u2019 project manager, said: \u201cCommunication and coordination between both VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick was excellent, showcasing the benefits of working collaboratively across VolkerWessels UK, evidenced by the bridge opening a week ahead of schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick have replaced an expired pedestrian footbridge over the London Victoria to Ramsgate railway cutting, at Gillingham, Kent VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick replaced the footbridge as part of VolkerHighways\u2019 highways infrastructure framework with Medway Council.
