{"id":94927,"date":"2021-06-17T14:52:20","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T13:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=94927"},"modified":"2021-06-17T14:52:20","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T13:52:20","slug":"construction-sme-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-sme-mental-health\/94927\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the economic recovery hiding mental health issues among construction SMEs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The economic recovery is concealing a growing mental health epidemic among construction SMEs, according to a new online survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouGov<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The survey, which was commissioned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Engineering Services Association<\/a> (BESA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Electrical Contractors\u2019 Association<\/a> (ECA), during Mental Health Awareness month, showed that extreme responses, such as suicidal thoughts, depression, and panic attacks, in construction SMEs are now 6% higher than in sectors experiencing a slower economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Despite an upbeat forecast for growth across the UK economy this year and a rapid recovery for construction and its related sectors, firms are continuing to report serious conditions amongst workers, including panic attacks, insomnia, and depression.<\/p>\n<p>Employees in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/mental-health-issues-smes\/72594\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction SMEs<\/a> are more than twice as likely to have suicidal thoughts as people employed in other sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Displays of extreme anger resulting from late payment are also 50% more likely in SME construction firms, than in businesses of a similar size in other industries, according to the survey.<\/p>\n<h3>Reaching crisis point<\/h3>\n<p>Rather than improving the situation, the speed of the sector\u2019s recovery seems to have added to the stress experienced by many construction SMEs and the perennial problem of late payment is the main culprit.<\/p>\n<p>More than a third of SMEs in construction, who responded to the survey, reported chronic mental health conditions in their workforce. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-industry-burnout\/91537\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poor mental health<\/a> increase physical health and safety risks putting even more lives in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Many constructions sites remained open during the pandemic, in particular smaller sites where social distancing was easier.
