Plans to transform the historic core of the University of Aberdeen<\/a>\u2019s King\u2019s College campus have been given the green light by Aberdeen City Council<\/a><\/h2>\n

The plans to enhance facilities in King\u2019s Quarter include\u00a0the creation of\u00a0a new flagship atrium, creating a central forum space with connections to surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n

There will also be\u00a0enhancements to the interiors of several areas, including the Old Senate Wing, Book Stack and Cromwell Tower.<\/p>\n

The available space at Aberdeen’s King\u2019s Quarter is currently underused, and the development will revitalise disused buildings, safeguarding their future use with new teaching and learning space<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As well as helping the university modernise its\u00a0teaching spaces to accommodate new learning styles,\u00a0it will also maintain the facades of these\u00a0historic buildings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Providing\u00a0a modern, adaptable, high quality teaching environment\u2019<\/h3>\n

Professor\u00a0Alan Speight,\u00a0Vice principal (Global Student Recruitment),\u00a0who leads on the King\u2019s Quarter and Johnston Halls redevelopment plans, commented: \u201cToday\u2019s decision\u00a0by the planning committee\u00a0marks a\u00a0milestone\u00a0in our\u00a0transformational\u00a0plans to\u00a0create\u00a0a vibrant learning environment at the historic heart of the\u00a0campus,\u00a0and\u00a0will\u00a0provide a focal point for engagement with the local community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese new\u00a0spaces\u00a0will\u00a0provide\u00a0a modern, adaptable, high quality teaching environment\u00a0for undergraduate and postgraduate students that will be ideally suited to working across academic disciplines, in line with the\u00a0interdisciplinary\u00a0aims of our\u00a0Aberdeen 2040 strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am pleased that\u00a0in their recommendation to the\u00a0planning\u00a0committee, the planning officers noted our careful consideration of the historic environment<\/a> to enable underused listed buildings\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0brought back into productive use, which reflects the detailed work we have undertaken on the proposals\u00a0over the past two years.\u201d<\/p>\n
