368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Lewes Magistrates\u2019 Court heard that on 9 January 2019, a worker installing a skirting board in a new build house was using a powered mitre saw to cut material to length.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Safety<\/a> (HSE), found that there was a systematic failure to ensure the mitre saw was properly guarded, and there was insufficient supervision on site.<\/p>\n<p>The guard of the saw had been propped up, meaning the full front of the saw blade was exposed.<\/p>\n<p>During the works, the mitre saw fell forward onto a worker\u2019s right hand causing part of their hand to be severed.<\/p>\n<p>This was re-attached in surgery, although he has not regained full use of it.<\/p>\n<h3>Safe working practices were being followed<\/h3>\n<p>Borrowdale Construction Homes Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974.<\/p>\n<p>They were fined \u00a321,000 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a311,567.<\/p>\n<p>HSE inspector Leah Sullivan, said: \u201cThis incident could so easily have been avoided by simply ensuring that the correct control measures were in place and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/environmental-risk-assessments-2\/61206\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safe working practices<\/a> were being followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
