{"id":95142,"date":"2021-06-23T07:38:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T06:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=95142"},"modified":"2021-06-23T07:38:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T06:38:58","slug":"flexible-working-construction-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/flexible-working-construction-workers\/95142\/","title":{"rendered":"Flexible working improves construction workers wellbeing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/timewise.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timewise<\/a>, the flexible working consultants today (23 June) publish the results of their Timewise Construction Pioneers programme \u2013 an 18-month project that has redesigned shift patterns in onsite roles to enable flexible working and enhance employee wellbeing<\/h2>\n<p>Timewise tested whether it is possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/wates-flexible-working\/95104\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improve the wellbeing of those working<\/a> on-site through changing the hours and times of working, as well as considering home-based working, where possible.<\/p>\n<p>The goal was to identify if this was possible to achieve without budgets or deadlines being affected, across a range of sites and projects.<\/p>\n<p>The pilots ran between June 2020 and February 2021, through the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the UK\u2019s largest construction companies took part: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bam.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Construct<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamnuttall.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Nuttall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skanska UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.willmottdixon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willmott Dixon<\/a>. Collectively they employ around 11,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot took place in a range of locations, from a HS2 site in London through to a substation build near Weston Super Mare, amongst teams employing between 14 and 120 workers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/builduk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Build UK<\/a>\u00a0partnered with Timewise on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-pioneers-programme\/66230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the programme<\/a>, and\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citb.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Industry Training Board<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Barclays Life Skills\u00a0supported its rollout.<\/p>\n<p>Timewise used a system it has developed for location-based roles which need to cover a long working day \u2013 which it calls the\u00a0\u2018shift-life balance\u2019 model.<\/p>\n<h3>It tested different types of flexible working:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>BAM Construct:\u00a0tested a\u00a0team-based approach to flexible working. Tested a consultative method of setting shifts that takes workers\u2019 personal preferences into account. This is similar to work Timewise has conducted with nurses in the NHS.<\/li>\n<li>BAM Nuttall: tested a\u00a0flexi-day approach in which workers could accumulate additional hours in exchange for one day off each month. A large portion of workers were living away and preferred to tag a flexi-day onto a weekend, to enjoy extended time at home.<\/li>\n<li>Willmott Dixon: Willmott Dixon used the expertise of Timewise to support commitments they had already made to staff (to limit hours worked to 45 per week inclusive of breaks and to ensure that an agile working plan is in place for all teams and on all new projects).<\/li>\n<li>Skanska UK:\u00a0earlier starts and finishes\u2013 Skanska UK trialled TWO different approaches with two different teams within the Skanska Costain STRABAG (SCS) joint venture, both revolving around earlier start and finish times:<\/li>\n<li>Output-based: The foreperson works with a planner to develop a more detailed version of the schedule of work, broken down into weekly and daily objectives. Working hours are set, based on the outputs to be achieved each day.<\/li>\n<li>Staggered: The foreman alternates start times between the teams each week,\u00a0\u00a0so that all workers get the pattern they want every other week. In addition to this, workers are given a choice of break times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A broad positive shift in wellbeing<\/h3>\n<p>Some stated that they would consider the ability to work flexibly as key criteria when applying for future jobs. Managers reported a greater sense of trust, ownership and a better team dynamic.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Stewart MBE, director of development at Timewise, said: \u201cOur trailblazing Pioneers: BAM Construct, BAM Nuttall, Skanska UK and Willmott Dixon have shown that wellbeing and balance should be possible to achieve for the whole workforce \u2013 not just those in-office roles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in doing so have provided a blueprint that we hope will drive wider industry change.
