Morgan Sindall<\/a> has successfully completed works on the Britannia leisure centre that supports healthy lifestyles in Hackney, London<\/h2>\n

The project was delivered for\u00a0Hackney Council<\/a>\u00a0and procured through the Southern Construction Framework<\/a>, it forms part of the first phase of an ambitious mixed-use community development located next to Shoreditch Park, alongside a new secondary school with sixth form and residential properties.<\/p>\n

Set over four storeys, the stacked leisure centre features a six-lane, 25-metre main pool with access to a steam room and sauna and a 20 metre by 10-metre training pool with movable floor and sensory lighting installation.<\/p>\n

\"\"Britannia leisure centre also boasts a large fitness suite with five flexible studio spaces, a six-court indoor sports hall, four squash courts, two five-a-side football pitches and two tennis courts on the roof of the building, along with a caf\u00e9 and public toilets which will be available for use by the local community and people visiting Shoreditch park.<\/p>\n

The project team put in place a number of initiatives to minimise disruption to the local community during the construction works<\/a>, including organised delivery planning, providing an alternative entrance to the existing leisure centre, and creating two dog stations with water bowls and waste bins in Shoreditch Park.<\/p>\n

Morgan Sindall Construction partnered with a number of local community organisations, including the Hackney-based\u00a0Shoreditch Trust<\/a> charity, to engage with the residents, enhance equality and diversity, and ensure the social value of the project was felt by the local community.<\/p>\n

The project made use of the adjoining transport for London Cycle Superhighway, CS1 by becoming the first construction project in London to use cargo bikes as part of the project delivery plan.<\/p>\n

In total, almost 100 deliveries were made using carbon-neutral cargo bikes. The project team also joined Transport for London<\/a> in promoting cargo bikes by joining the TfL’s\u00a0cargo bike forums.<\/p>\n

Engaging positively with local residents<\/h3>\n

Richard Dobson, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: \u201cWe really understand the value of community leisure facilities and how they can act as a springboard for better physical and mental health outcomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been able to engage positively with local residents as well as offer both employment and apprenticeship opportunities, something which earned us the title of Apprentice Employer of the Year at Hackney Council\u2019s Apprenticeship Awards 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n
