injuries was 142 in Great Britain in 2020\/21, an increase of 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/hse-workplace-fatality\/78512\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the previous year<\/a>, though the number of deaths in 2019\/20 (113) was low compared to other recent years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96031 number of fatalities has remained broadly level in recent years \u2013 the average annual number of workers killed at work over the five years 2016\/17-2020\/21 is 136.<\/p>\n<h3>By accident kind<\/h3>\n<p>The most common kind of fatal injuries to workers continues as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/falls-from-height-2\/88648\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">falls from a height<\/a>, being struck by a moving vehicle and being struck by a moving object, between them accounting for over half of all fatal accidents to workers in 2020\/21.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96030 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-2021-07-09-at-10.19.39-300x127.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"272\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-safety-to-prevent-injury\/63826\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rate of fatal injury<\/a> to workers showed a generally downward trend but has been broadly flat in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted though that the coronavirus pandemic and the government response to its impact have had a significant effect on the UK labour market in 2020\/21.<\/p>\n<p>Many businesses have ceased operating or have changed their working practices, while government interventions have allowed for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/furloughed-workers\/73922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">furloughing of workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Taking account of differing employment levels between sectors, then the rate of fatal injuries per 100,000 workers is greatest in agriculture, forestry and fishing and waste and recycling.<\/p>\n<div
