{"id":96321,"date":"2021-07-16T10:58:35","date_gmt":"2021-07-16T09:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=96321"},"modified":"2021-07-16T10:58:35","modified_gmt":"2021-07-16T09:58:35","slug":"digital-construction-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/digital-construction-skills\/96321\/","title":{"rendered":"Northumbria Uni launches bootcamps to boost digital construction skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northumbria University<\/a> has launched new skills bootcamps to plug the digital skills gap and support the expansion of the digital construction sector<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ioc.northumbria.ac.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Coding (IoC)<\/a>\u00a0is a collaborative national consortium of industry, educators and outreach providers that are working together to respond to the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/digital-twins-data-quality\/85742\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital skills<\/a> gap through the delivery of employer-led digital skills education.<\/p>\n<p>The IoC consortium, which is led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Bath<\/a>, was announced by Government as a provider for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Education\u2019s<\/a> (DfE) Skills Bootcamps.<\/p>\n<p>Skills Bootcamps are flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up tech skills and fast-track to an interview with an employer.<\/p>\n<p>The Skills Bootcamps will provide learners with best-in-class digital skills education and deliver resilient pathways to work, with learners receiving the opportunity to interview with an employer upon the successful completion of their Skills Bootcamp.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this provision, Northumbria University has been awarded \u00a3800,000 to deliver a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/instituteofcoding.org\/skillsbootcamps\/search\/?_sfm_course_provider_boot=3701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">series of two, 16-week long Skills Bootcamps<\/a>, entitled\u00a0\u2018Cloud Computing and Data Analytics\u00a0and\u00a0Software Developer\/Engineer\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Cloud Computing and Data Analytics<em>\u00a0<\/em>course is targeted at those working within the construction industry, with a focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/digital-engineering-3\/94225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital construction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Skills Bootcamps will teach data science technologies and techniques, covering the following subjects:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The role of coding in the construction industry<\/li>\n<li>Understanding Building Information Modelling (BIM)<\/li>\n<li>Big data analytics, Machine Learning<\/li>\n<li>Internet of Things, Blockchain<\/li>\n<li>Artificial Intelligence Algorithms, Neural Network Learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0Software Developer\/Engineer\u00a0course is aimed at architects, engineers, technicians, technologists, and anyone interested in advanced digital model authoring and manipulation. It will cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding Building Information Modelling (BIM)<\/li>\n<li>Industry-specific software training<\/li>\n<li>Getting under the skin \u2013 opening up the SDK<\/li>\n<li>Introducing Dynamo and Python<\/li>\n<li>Workforce Skills Training \u2013 presentation skills, employability skills, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both courses will also focus on presentation skills, case study development and training, employability skills, and interview technique.<\/p>\n<p>The Skills Bootcamps\u00a0will take place online initially and will include a mixture of pre-recorded instructional material and timetabled live sessions.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Digital skills are critical for delivering on future challenges\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\/about-us\/leadership-governance\/university-executive\/pro-vice-chancellor-employability-and-partnerships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lucy Winskell OBE<\/a>, pro vice-chancellor (employability and partnerships) at Northumbria University and chair of the board of the NELEP said: \u201cWe are delighted to be supporting the delivery of the government\u2019s Skills Bootcamps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthumbria\u2019s expertise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/digital-construction-shoestring\/93871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital construction<\/a> research, combined with our reputation for innovation and entrepreneurism, and our strong industry partnerships, means we are extremely well-placed to provide this vital training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with our regional partners, we are committed to ensuring the North East economy remains resilient in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we look forward to helping to plug the digital skills gap and supporting the expansion of the digital construction sector in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-staff\/s\/becky-strachan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Becky Strachan<\/a>, deputy pro vice-chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering and Environment at Northumbria University, added: \u201cWe are delighted to be working with the University of Bath and the wider IoC consortium to offer these Skills Bootcamps tailored to support the construction industry to build its human capability around digital technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese bootcamps bring together our expertise at Northumbria in digital technologies and the built environment and build on our strong partnerships in the region and across the UK around digital construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking forward to seeing the tangible benefits that participants and employers will reap from this great skills initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Bailey, chair of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cene.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Constructing Excellence in the North East<\/a>, said: \u201cCongratulations to Northumbria University and their partners.
