Lendlease<\/a> is phasing out liquid fossil fuels such as diesel and petrol on any of its UK construction projects, as part of its commitment to tackle climate change<\/h2>\n

Under a new Alternative Fuels Policy, diesel, petrol, and gas to liquid (GTL), which are often\u00a0used to power machinery onsite, as well as fuel gases such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG)\u00a0typically used for heating, will need to be replaced by alternative fuels.<\/p>\n

Alternatives include\u00a0Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), hydrogen fuel cells, renewables and electrified plant\u00a0when available.<\/p>\n

This new policy will help Lendlease to eliminate diesel from its construction business, a key\u00a0milestone in the company\u2019s Roadmap to Absolute Zero Carbon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lendlease currently uses\u00a0about 400,000 litres of diesel per year in the UK. Therefore, removing it entirely has the\u00a0potential to cut carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes \u2013 the equivalent of growing 16,500\u00a0trees from seedlings over 10 years.<\/p>\n

Although efforts to reduce the environmental impact of construction sites began some time\u00a0ago, in 2020, Lendlease began its mission to eliminate fossil fuels from them entirely in a bid\u00a0to tackle climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Backed by global carbon targets to reach net-zero by 2025<\/h3>\n

Lendlease is accelerating its\u00a0efforts to eliminate direct (Scope 1) emissions from burning fossil fuels across its UK\u00a0construction projects<\/a>. This began by trialling diesel replacements across a number of its UK\u00a0construction projects, in partnership with its supply chain.<\/p>\n

With extensive research and two successful pilots at Lendlease\u2019s Glen Parva prison and the\u00a0Manchester Town Hall<\/a> project, the company is now taking its next bold step to forego diesel\u00a0entirely.<\/p>\n

The policy comes into immediate effect for new projects, with existing projects having until January 1, 2022, to comply.<\/p>\n

Only HVO derived from used cooking oil will be accepted and must also come with Proof of Sustainability documentation. HVO is a sustainable alternative to diesel as it reduces CO\u2082\u00a0emissions by up to 90%, compared with conventional diesel and can be used as a \u2018drop in\u2019\u00a0replacement.<\/p>\n

Simon Gorski, Lendlease Europe\u2019s managing director of construction, said: \u201cRemoving diesel and other liquid fossil fuels on our UK construction projects is a big step in the right direction for us at Lendlease.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur end goal is to eliminate fossil fuels entirely, so mandating\u00a0that all projects transition to alternative, low carbon solutions like HVO is going to help us get\u00a0there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt won\u2019t be a small task, and it\u2019ll take collaboration across the entire value chain to\u00a0achieve. But we are committed to working with our clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to\u00a0get there and tackle climate change, together.\u201d<\/p>\n
