{"id":96518,"date":"2021-07-20T12:26:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T11:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=96518"},"modified":"2021-07-20T12:26:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T11:26:58","slug":"m2-junction-improvements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/m2-junction-improvements\/96518\/","title":{"rendered":"Graham to deliver M2 junction 5 improvements"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Following Government approval, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graham.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham<\/a> has been awarded a contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/highwaysengland.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highways England<\/a> to upgrade Junction 5 of the M2 motorway in Kent<\/h2>\n<p>The \u00a392m contract will see Graham deliver major improvements to the slip roads and junction approaches around the M2 junction near Sittingbourne in Kent.<\/p>\n<p>The contract will improve journey times for thousands of drivers in the region. Works will also involve the enlargement of the Stockbury Roundabout on the A249 which passes under the M2.<\/p>\n<p>The Graham team will be replacing the roundabout with a new flyover interchange to provide improved traffic flow on the A249.<\/p>\n<p>Two new dedicated free-flowing slip roads will be created with a left turn for traffic travelling from the A249 southbound to the M2 westbound and a left turn from the A249 northbound to the M2 eastbound.<\/p>\n<p>The contract award follows the approval from the transport secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/north-south-rail-links\/87911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Shapps<\/a>, for the proposed improvements at the M2 junction 5 Stockbury Interchange, which was announced on Monday 21 June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Graham will commence construction works in Autumn 2021.<\/p>\n<h3>A safer network for everyone<\/h3>\n<p>Dave Brown, highways director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graham.co.uk\/expertise\/civil-engineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham Civil Engineering<\/a>,\u00a0said: \u201cThis project is a major achievement for Graham and an opportunity for us to reinforce our expertise in the highways sector by delivering vast improvements to this busy junction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe M2 is one of the busiest roads in Kent and experiences queuing and heavy congestion on a daily basis. It also currently has one of the highest collision rates of England\u2019s motorway and major A roads nationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work at Junction 5 will help create a much safer, better connected and more free-flowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/highways-england-net-zero\/96470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motorway<\/a>.
