A consistent approach to supporting construction workers\u2019 mental health is the\u00a0goal\u00a0of a\u00a0new initiative led by\u00a0the Construction Leadership Council<\/a> (CLC)\u00a0and\u00a0CITB<\/a><\/h2>\n

CITB\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Mental Health and Construction: A Consistent Approach<\/a>\u2019\u00a0research is the most comprehensive study conducted on mental health and self-harm within construction.<\/p>\n

CITB\u2019s new research\u00a0highlights\u00a0a growing number of\u00a0good\u00a0initiatives but\u00a0finds\u00a0that their impact is currently held back by the lack of\u00a0a coherent aim and message.\u00a0Given the growing need to tackle mental health<\/a>, developing a joined-up approach has become more urgent.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0identifies opportunities for industry to address shortcomings and improve wellbeing for workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The risk of suicide among some\u00a0site-based\u00a0workers is three times the national average and a\u00a0May 2020 Chartered Institute of Building report found that 26% of construction workers who responded to their survey had experienced suicidal thoughts; 97% had experienced stress over the past year.<\/p>\n

The CLC\u00a0has backed the research having already prioritised mental health in its recovery plan and is\u00a0now pulling industry together to agree a plan to address it.<\/p>\n

The level and quality of evidence must improve<\/h3>\n

Industry\u00a0culture\u00a0still\u00a0perpetuates poor mental wellbeing.\u00a0Factors include\u00a0working away from home,\u00a0heavy workloads,\u00a0long working hours,\u00a0and job insecurity.\u00a0Poor management practices and understanding can exacerbate the problem,\u00a0but\u00a0some\u00a0exemplars do a great job of looking after their workers\u00a0– this inconsistency needs to be tackled.<\/p>\n

There is a range of different mental health and wellbeing support available from industry professional bodies, charities and employers. However, evidence of the effectiveness of the support available is limited.<\/p>\n

Progress has been \u201chas been frustratingly slow\u201d<\/h3>\n

Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity<\/a>, said:\u00a0\u201cDoing things right is important. Doing right things can save lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cImplementing and measuring a comprehensive programme to improve workforce wellbeing in construction needs no thought, it is the right thing to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will improve the workplace culture, support and retain the existing workforce, make the industry more attractive to the next generation and will undoubtably save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

CITB\u00a0policy director Steve Radley,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cAs well as supporting\u00a0construction workers, tackling mental health\u00a0will help employers\u00a0to retain more of them and get the best from them at a time when\u00a0more firms are reporting skill\u00a0shortages.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need strong industry leadership\u00a0on this and it\u2019s great to see\u00a0CLC picking up the baton.\u201d<\/p>\n

CECA chief executive\u00a0Alasdair Reisner,\u00a0who leads the CLC workplace culture workstream,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cThe CLC is acutely aware of the mental health and wellbeing challenges faced by industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cProgress towards improving the situation has been frustratingly slow in recent years and there is no doubt that some of the statistics relating to mental health and construction are not good enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cEncouragingly, this report from CITB includes good examples of best practice from which the whole sector can be inspired.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CLC will provide the shared vision and goals that industry has called for. We will do our utmost to accelerate improvements across the sector, particularly for SMEs, and look forward to collaborating with stakeholders on this crucial construction priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funding and support<\/h3>\n

CITB provided funding\u00a0for a\u00a0Build UK<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Timewise<\/a> project where BAM\u00a0Construct<\/a>, BAM\u00a0Nuttall<\/a>, Skanska<\/a> and Willmott Dixon<\/a> joined forces to identify what measures best enhanced\u00a0flexible working for some 11,000 employees.<\/p>\n

Funding by CITB, through the Building Mental Health initiative, the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and Mental Health First Aid England<\/a>, has helped train over 260 Mental Health First Aid Instructors.<\/p>\n

Building Mental Health, supported by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, provides free support and resources, from industry experts, to increase mental health awareness.<\/p>\n

The CLC,\u00a0with support from CITB, has already taken the lead in engaging with organisations to agree the best way to deliver an integrated support service of shared goals and strategies.<\/p>\n
