Birmingham City Council<\/a> has given the green light for plans to deliver a 10-storey landmark building at Aston University<\/a><\/h2>\n

The building at Aston University will create a landmark, as part of plans to refresh the central Birmingham campus with a significant and impactful masterplan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ground floor to the building will be open to the university community and public alike.<\/p>\n

A new groundfloor arcade, with social spaces and a caf\u00e9, will provide spaces to relax, socialise and connect with the new landscaped public realm.<\/p>\n

The new building will create important opportunities for Aston University to come together with the local community.<\/p>\n

On the upper floors, the building will incorporate world-class teaching and learning facilities<\/a>, and academic workspace. This includes flexible lecture theatres, seminar rooms and inspirational study spaces for use by the whole University community.<\/p>\n

\u2018A building of iconic status\u2019<\/h3>\n

Ian Oldacre, director of estates at Aston University, said: \u201cOur ambitious campus vision sets out our aspiration to invest significantly in the delivery of a \u2018destination campus\u2019 to meet the changing demands and opportunities faced by universities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAston University\u2019s future growth will embrace evolving trends such as online and remote learning, greater connectivity, the growth in international students and closer collaboration with commercial partners and the business community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new landmark building represents the first stage of our masterplan and long-term strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have worked closely with our partners at Birmingham City Council to develop a building of iconic status, not only for Aston University, but for the city of Birmingham.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawkins\\Brown was appointed to design the building following a competition in 2019 and leads a consultant team that includes Price & Myers, Hoare Lea, and Ridge & Partners.<\/p>\n

Tom Noonan, partner at Hawkins\\Brown<\/a>, commented: \u201cThis landmark building will serve as a dynamic new front door to Aston University\u2019s campus \u2013 an interface between the university and the wider city.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is designed as a building of two halves: civic uses are provided in the lower section which opens out onto a landscaped plaza, enabling new public routes to emerging districts such as Birmingham’s knowledge quarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbove this plinth is a more playful \u2018lantern\u2019 which contains learning spaces and academic offices. The dynamic and visually striking lantern offers roof terraces where the floorplates shift and is designed to deliver new types of flexible spaces for the university well into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
