{"id":97495,"date":"2021-08-10T09:40:38","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T08:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=97495"},"modified":"2021-08-10T09:40:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T08:40:38","slug":"project-managers-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/project-managers-approach\/97495\/","title":{"rendered":"Over half of project managers change their approach since lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>52% of project professionals say the methodology they use for their main project has changed since the start of the first UK lockdown in March 2020, with 51% of those adopting a more hybrid approach<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwx8iIBhBwEiwA2quaq8Miru1mQuOFjppyRUV_nWviHlSQKXi2c2sjXroM1RoDkaUX1HpOlhoCO0MQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for Project Management<\/a> (APM) undertook the survey, which reveals the different approaches that project managers have embraced since lockdown, as well as the main benefits achieved.<\/p>\n<p>The main benefits achieved by changing the approach include\u00a0greater flexibility and adaptability,\u00a0better understanding of what is being delivered and being easier to identify and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/specialist-subcontractors-quality\/90446\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resolve issues on the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>APM\u2019s survey, carried out by research company <a href=\"https:\/\/censuswide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Censuswide<\/a>, also reveals the industry sectors which have seen the highest number of project managers changing approach to their main project, with healthcare\/pharmaceutical, manufacturing and construction seeing the largest shift.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also reveals that the overall majority (85%) of respondents say they anticipate using this new approach on similar projects in the future, proving how valuable it can be to project teams to pivot to new approaches when circumstances change.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 52% of project professionals who have changed methodology on their main project since March 2020:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51% have shifted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/net-zero-commercial-heating\/87912\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a more hybrid approach<\/a> \u2013 a pragmatic approach that combines a linear (or \u2018waterfall\u2019) life cycle for some phases with an iterative (or \u2018agile\u2019) life cycle for others) *<\/li>\n<li>28% have shifted to a more agile approach (a methodology where requirements and solutions are developed iteratively and incrementally throughout the project life cycle)<\/li>\n<li>20% have shifted to a more linear\/waterfall approach (a life cycle where phases of the project are sequential)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In construction, 51% of project professionals say they have changed their approach.
