{"id":97620,"date":"2021-08-11T14:03:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T13:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=97620"},"modified":"2021-08-11T14:03:26","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T13:03:26","slug":"material-shortages-roofing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/material-shortages-roofing\/97620\/","title":{"rendered":"Pressure rises for roofers as material shortages intensify"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The roofing and cladding industry continues to be strained by skill and material shortages as well as suffering cost increases, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfrc.co.uk\/docs\/default-source\/publications\/roofing-industry\/nfrc-state-of-the-uk-roofing-industry-q2-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFRC\/Glenigan State of the Roofing Industry survey<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Four out of five (81%) roofing contractors saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/answer-to-material-shortages\/95743\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deterioration in material availability<\/a> in the second quarter of the year, with the most common shortage areas still being concrete roof tiles, followed by timber battens, insulation, general timber and clay tiles.<\/p>\n<p>Every single respondent to the survey reported that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/building-materials-shortage\/94515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">price of materials<\/a> went up in the previous quarter, with some reporting price rises as high as 300% on some products.<\/p>\n<p>Three quarters (76%) of respondents also reported recruitment difficulties in the last quarter, up from 44% in the first three months of the year. The shortage of labour is impacting wage rates, with 58% of firms reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/2021-building-materials-crisis\/96690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rising labour costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Almost half (47%) of contractors struggled to find roof slaters and tilers, with 27% finding it hard to even find general labourers.<\/p>\n<h3>The report found:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A net balance of 53% of contractors saw an increase in their workloads against the first quarter;<\/li>\n<li>Scotland saw the strongest rise in workload after a subdued performance in the first quarter of the year. Firms in Yorkshire and the Humber saw a drop in workloads after above-average growth in the previous two quarters;<\/li>\n<li>Over a third (35%) saw a rise in enquiries on the previous quarter;<\/li>\n<li>One in ten contractors (10%) increased their headcount in the last three months;<\/li>\n<li>Whilst two thirds (65%) of members had payment terms of 30 days or less, only 39% of these were paid within that period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Addressing the ongoing material and skills crisis<\/h3>\n<p>NFRC\u2019s head of policy, Philip Campbell, said: \u201cThe second quarter of this year saw material shortages intensify further, with roofing contractors now reporting difficulty obtaining a whole range of products, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/timber-shortages-worsen\/94148\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not only tiles and timber<\/a> but on materials as far-ranging as plastics and steel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrices also continue to rise, with 100% of respondents to this survey telling us their material prices went up in the last quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContractors reported that some products had seen increases in the hundreds of per cent in recent months. It is critical that clients work with their supply chain to provide flexibility in contracts to adjust for these unprecedented increases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe availability of labour has also worsened, with three-quarters of contractors now experiencing recruitment difficulties. Positive workloads have meant more firms took on staff in the last quarter, but there are simply not enough roofers out there to meet the demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaffing has proved difficult for contractors over the last quarter as a result of the \u2018pingdemic\u2019. One member has told us he has lost 1000 days of productive hours due to staff having to self-isolate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkloads are set to continue to rise for the next quarter, and indeed the next year, which is encouraging, but the industry, clients, and government must all focus on addressing the ongoing material and skills crisis we are experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we don\u2019t start resolving these issues now, we may see a detrimental impact of the growth we have seen coming out of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glenigan\u2019s economics director, Allan Wilen, added: \u201cConstruction continued to recover during the second quarter, with roofing contractors reporting a strong rise in workloads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate housing and commercial repair, maintenance and improvement work and new house construction have been the best performing areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/material-shortage-roofing\/92971\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roofing contractors<\/a> anticipate further, more broadly based growth over the next 12 months.
