The Bristol East Junction project\u00a0will allow more trains to enter and exit the station, increase capacity, reduce congestion and help make journeys more reliable<\/h2>\n

Network Rail<\/a>\u00a0engineers\u00a0have been working\u00a0around the clock to\u00a0complete the\u00a0track upgrade\u00a0which involves\u00a0removing a bottleneck into Bristol Temple Meads and\u00a0installing a clever new\u00a0track\u00a0layout\u00a0just north of the station.<\/p>\n

In addition to replacing\u00a0the 1960s track and components,\u00a0work is also ongoing to\u00a0install\u00a0state of the art signalling equipment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Engineers\u00a0have already\u00a0replaced\u00a0over 2.1km of track,\u00a0laid\u00a0around\u00a07,000 tonnes of ballast\u00a0(stones that support the track),\u00a0completed over\u00a0400 welds\u00a0and\u00a0realigned 200m of copers to\u00a0suit the new track alignment design on platforms 1, 3 and 5\u00a0to ensure the safe and smooth running of the railway.<\/p>\n

As part of the upgrade of Bristol East Junction, an extra line is also being introduced which will support new suburban services\u00a0in the future\u00a0as part of the West of England Combined Authority\u2019s (WECA) MetroWest scheme.<\/p>\n

This scheme will provide over 4,000 additional seats on trains every day in the area.<\/p>\n

This project is funded by Department for Transport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Building back better in Bristol<\/h3>\n

Rail minister Chris Heaton-Harris, said: \u201cThis \u00a3132m investment will mean more regular and more reliable trains with more seats coming through the station as we increase access to opportunities and better connect communities across the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlongside this we are doing an extensive refurbishment of Bristol Temple Meads<\/a>, providing better passenger facilities and improved accessibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another great example of how we are building back better in Bristol and levelling up the South West.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard Rowland, GWR customer service and operations director, added:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThis work will in time help us to deliver 4,000 more train seats a day into the city, on more services through Bristol and help to reduce the conflict between long-distance and local stopping services, helping to maintain the reliability of our trains.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to operate trains through Bristol for the vast majority of the period, but there continues to be some alterations to timetables and journey frequency, so please do check what is best for you if you\u2019re travelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bristol rail regeneration programme<\/h3>\n

This\u00a0track upgrade\u00a0work\u00a0is part of\u00a0the\u00a0wider\u00a0Bristol Rail Regeneration<\/a>\u00a0programme that\u00a0will see\u00a0a number of\u00a0improvements to the iconic Bristol Temple Meads station over the next three years,\u00a0representing a major investment in sustainable transport in the region\u00a0and\u00a0creating a major transport hub that will serve\u00a0millions\u00a0of\u00a0passengers\u00a0each year and support business\u00a0right across the region.<\/p>\n
