{"id":97692,"date":"2021-08-12T14:36:40","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T13:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=97692"},"modified":"2021-08-13T08:11:04","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T07:11:04","slug":"raf-odihams-runway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/raf-odihams-runway\/97692\/","title":{"rendered":"Amey\u2019s highways and defence teams deliver RAF Odiham\u2019s runway"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Amey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amey.co.uk\/what-we-do\/transport-infrastructure\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transport infrastructure<\/a> and defence teams, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levertech.com\/our-services\/aviation-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Levertech Aviation Services<\/a> have successfully delivered a \u00a35.5m contract to upgrade the runway and associated airfield lighting at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/our-organisation\/stations\/raf-odiham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RAF Odiham<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The work was carried out on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/defence-infrastructure-organisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Defence Infrastructure Organisation<\/a> (DIO). <\/span>Funds\u00a0comprising\u00a0\u00a32.9m for the runway\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a32.6m for lighting\u00a0were\u00a0mobilised within 10 days to enable works to start just before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>This involved a lot of pre-planning and engagement with key stakeholders at RAF Odiham so that\u00a0the project\u00a0could begin before the worst of the winter weather arrived.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The works saw the top 40mm of the runway removed and replaced\u00a0with\u00a08,500 tonnes of asphalt. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/infrastructure-skills-megaprojects\/57034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">important project<\/a> will extend the life of the runway for another 15 years.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All works were undertaken during the day, allowing the runway and RAF Odiham to remain operational for rotary aircraft movements throughout the surfacing works. This was achieved by splitting the runway into two halves, with Amey working on one half of the runway and RAF Odiham operating from the other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once the first half of the runway had been resurfaced, operations\u00a0switched so that\u00a0work\u00a0could commence on\u00a0the second half.<\/p>\n<p>Amey also supported the Station by facilitating land movement of Chinooks, and\u00a0over 1,000 asphalt delivery vehicles, through an alternative\u00a0side gate\u00a0to reduce the impact of the project on the main gate and\u00a0the\u00a0surrounding\u00a0RAF Odiham Road\u00a0network.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consultation with private\u00a0landowners had to take place\u00a0for\u00a0lighting works\u00a0to\u00a0replace all aeronautical ground lighting services for the runway,\u00a0including elevated edge, threshold and end and both elevated approaches\u00a0as\u00a0approach masts are located within private farmland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other work involved replacing existing constant current regulators, cabling and transformers alongside installation of two new standby package generators.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A vital asset for the Armed Forces<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Station Commander RAF Odiham, group captain, Nicholas Knight OBE MA, said: &#8220;These essential works at RAF Odiham have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/typhoon-infrastructure-raf-lossiemouth\/78093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upgraded our existing runway<\/a>, and replaced the runway lighting with modern, more energy efficient lighting, extending the life in excess of 15 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Many thanks to Amey and their subcontractors, on behalf of DIO, who have successfully carried out the works which saw Chinook Force operations continue unaffected throughout.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tim Redfern, Amey\u2019s managing director of defence, added: \u201cI\u2019m delighted that once again, the collaborative efforts of Amey\u2019s <a
