{"id":97963,"date":"2021-08-18T12:46:18","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T11:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=97963"},"modified":"2021-08-18T12:46:18","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T11:46:18","slug":"lower-carbon-asphalts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/lower-carbon-asphalts\/97963\/","title":{"rendered":"Highways England switches to lower carbon asphalts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/highwaysengland.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highways England<\/a> is accelerating the use of warm mix asphalts, as part of a drive toward net zero carbon emissions<\/h2>\n<p>Highways England has been using the material since 2015 and a collaborative programme with the supply chain and extensive research now means it can be used freely across the Strategic Road Network (SRN).<\/p>\n<p>Previously requiring an application for a departure from the standard, Highways England is now asking all those involved in the construction and\/or maintenance of the strategic road network, particularly designers and main contractors, to utilise warm mix asphalts (WMAs) as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/highways-england-net-zero\/96470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moves towards net zero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WMA technologies can offer enhanced efficiencies and lower production carbon, with CO2 savings of up to 15% when compared to conventional hot mix asphalts.<\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/about\/mps-and-lords\/members\/apg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All Party Parliamentary Group<\/a> on Highways\u2019 report in September 2019, WMAs account for significant volumes worldwide \u2013 almost 40% of asphalt production in the USA and over 15% in France \u2013 but WMAs remain under-utilised in the UK, where they currently represent less than 4% of overall asphalt production.<\/p>\n<h3>WMAs can be laid using existing equipment and bring benefits, including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Carbon reduction:<\/strong> the lower production temperatures of WMAs reduce the carbon emissions associated with asphalt production by up to 15% compared to hot mix asphalts. More widespread use of WMAs will help Highways England to achieve its aim of net zero by 2050.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increased productivity:<\/strong> reduced laying temperatures mean that WMAs take a shorter time to cool so greater volumes of asphalt can be laid in one shift, or the finished surface opened earlier to traffic without the risk of the material deforming under heavy loads. This will increase productivity by enabling more material to be laid within a working window, reducing the overall timeframe of the works and potential delays to motorists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved health and safety:<\/strong> reduced temperatures also help to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-risk-management\/90885\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduce the health and safety risks<\/a> associated with both production and laying of asphalt at high temperatures such as burns, exposure to fumes and the impact of steam on visibility, particularly when wearing safety eyewear. With WMAs, fume generation is reduced by around 50% for each 10\u00b0C reduction in temperature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved durability:<\/strong> due to being laid at lower temperatures and the increased amount that can be laid in a single shift, it also means less construction joints in the road requiring less maintenance in the future. This again increases the long-term benefits of the technology, life-time cost and need to undertake further maintenance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Highways England\u2019s net zero carbon plan<\/h3>\n<p>Carbon reduction lies at the heart of Highways England\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/highwaysengland.co.uk\/netzerohighways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero carbon plan<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Transport<\/a>\u2019s decarbonisation plan, with both aiming to shift the UK to a low-carbon economy.<\/p>\n<p>It has already stated sustained action towards decarbonising\u202fEngland\u2019s motorways and A-roads so they can continue to bring significant benefits to\u202fmotorists, communities\u202fand businesses in a net-zero\u202ffuture.<\/p>\n<p>The plan will\u202fput roads at the heart of Britain\u2019s net zero future through three key commitments;
