{"id":97993,"date":"2021-08-19T09:53:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T08:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=97993"},"modified":"2021-08-19T09:53:59","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T08:53:59","slug":"continuing-professional-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/continuing-professional-development\/97993\/","title":{"rendered":"Architects urged to shape continuing professional development scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/arb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architects Registration Board<\/a> (ARB) has launched a major public engagement exercise inviting architects to help shape the regulator\u2019s approach to continuing professional development (CPD)<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/building-safety-bill-6\/96679\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Safety Bill<\/a>, introduced in Parliament in July 2021, will give ARB new powers to monitor the training and development architects carry out throughout their careers.<\/p>\n<p>ARB will introduce a scheme for monitoring CPD that will encourage architects to maintain and develop their competence to practice.<\/p>\n<p>Architects are encouraged to read ARB\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arb.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Scheme-for-continuing-professional-development-proposed-principles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">policy paper<\/a>\u00a0setting out the principles, and complete a\u00a0short survey\u00a0to share their views. The survey will close at midday on 29 November.<\/p>\n<p>ARB\u2019s new legal powers are dependent on the Building Safety Bill becoming law. That is unlikely to be this year and, given ARB\u2019s ambitious engagement exercises, the scheme is unlikely to be in place for the whole profession before 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The new law will provide for the formalities of dealing with those architects who are unable or unwilling to meet the requirements of the new scheme.<\/p>\n<p>ARB is inviting architects to share their views on the principles before they are used to develop the scheme.<\/p>\n<h3>The principles are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve the overall competence of the profession: The scheme will aim for an overall positive shift in the collective competence of the profession by promoting a culture of continuing professional development. It will not be about catching out individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Tailored by architects to their own practice and needs: The scheme will encourage architects to reflect, plan, act and evaluate on their learning activities in a way that is relevant to their practice and development needs. The approach will not be \u2018one-size-fits-all\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Proportionate and deliverable: ARB\u2019s research shows the majority (70%) of architects are already committed to carrying out dedicated CPD annually, so the scheme will aim to formalise and shape that learning. It should, as far as possible, avoid additional costs for architects.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid duplication where possible: ARB intends to design a model that is suitable for all architects, and will be considering how best it can work alongside other schemes \u2013 both in terms of subject matter and logistical compatibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The first step in creating the scheme<\/h3>\n<p>Alan Kershaw, chair of the Architects Registration Board, said: \u201cWe\u2019re focussed on introducing an effective new scheme as soon as that is viable, but we\u2019re equally determined to get it right.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have lots of ideas but this isn\u2019t something that can, or should, be designed in an ivory tower. If it\u2019s going to improve standards of practice across the profession, architects need to help us design something they will use and find useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking all architects \u2013 and anyone else working in the built environment sector \u2013 to read about our principles for the scheme and complete our survey.
