{"id":98202,"date":"2021-08-24T08:26:31","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T07:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=98202"},"modified":"2021-08-24T08:26:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T07:26:31","slug":"keltbray-demolishes-ferrybridge-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/keltbray-demolishes-ferrybridge-site\/98202\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] Keltbray demolishes chimneys and boiler house at Ferrybridge site"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keltbray.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keltbray<\/a> has completed the latest major demolition activity at the former Ferrybridge \u2018C\u2019 Power Station in West Yorkshire on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/sse.co.uk\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SSE<\/a><\/h2>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"mLZgYcP0QnA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ferrybridge &#039;C&#039; Power Station Blowdown 2021\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mLZgYcP0QnA?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A single \u2018blowdown\u2019 saw the removal of the two chimney stacks, the main boiler house, and Bunker Bay. At 198-metres high, the two chimney stacks were the tallest structures at the Ferrybridge site.<\/p>\n<p>This blowdown follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/demolition-euston-hs2\/55311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">successful demolition<\/a> of a cooling tower at the Ferrybridge site in July 2019 and four further cooling towers in October of the same year.<\/p>\n<p>The former coal-fired power station was officially closed by SSE in March 2016, having produced electricity for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the station and subsequent demolition works are part of SSE\u2019s transition to a low-carbon energy future, in line with the UK\u2019s target for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/net-zero-roadmap\/96940\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero carbon emissions by 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keltbray carried out the blowdown using controlled explosives, with a 250-metre exclusion zone being put in place to ensure safety.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby homes were evacuated for a short time on the Sunday morning with Keltbray and SSE engaging with residents throughout.<\/p>\n<h3>A major milestone in decommissioning Ferrybridge \u2018C\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Bobby Ellis, senior project manager, demolition &amp; construction, said: \u201cThis morning\u2019s blowdown was a success. The demolition was months in planning and marks another major milestone in history, not only in Ferrybridge but in the UK in general.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keltbray is committed to being considerate to the communities in which we operate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs well as engaging with local residents, we put in place comprehensive ground monitoring to ensure the surrounding structures were unaffected by the blowdown, and we\u2019re pleased to report that the activity went ahead safely and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to say a massive well done and thanks to the project team who made this happen safely and efficiently.
