{"id":98238,"date":"2021-08-24T10:47:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T09:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=98238"},"modified":"2021-08-24T10:47:44","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T09:47:44","slug":"flood-hazard-mapping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/flood-hazard-mapping\/98238\/","title":{"rendered":"Flood hazard mapping to help Scotland prepare for future flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sepa.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Environment Protection Agency<\/a>\u00a0(SEPA) is introducing new flood hazard mapping to help Scotland better prepare for future increased flood risk<\/h2>\n<p>SEPA is introducing new flood hazard mapping which will provide a clearer indication of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/managing-surface-water-on-construction-sites\/41046\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surface water<\/a> (also known as pluvial) flood risk now and in future.<\/p>\n<p>It will enable people, communities and businesses to better understand the risks and act to reduce the impact of surface water flooding.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of the new flood hazard mapping will support delivery of SEPA\u2019s Flooding Services Strategy being published in autumn 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Surface water flood maps have been publicly available on the SEPA website since 2013, however, the 2018 National Flood Risk Assessment identified surface water as the largest source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/guides-reviews\/flood-risk-2\/44157\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flood risk<\/a> affecting Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The mapping, which will be provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbaconsulting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JBA Consulting<\/a>, will provide a complete refresh of SEPA\u2019s national surface water flood maps using up-to-date data on current and future rainfall, improving flood map products to provide more confident results of where surface water flooding is likely.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Ensuring people and businesses are resilient to flooding\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Vincent Fitzsimons, head of hydrology &amp; flooding at SEPA, said: \u201cThe latest landmark climate change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/ipcc-report\/117241\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report from the IPCC<\/a> is a clarion call for what the world already knows, that the climate emergency is accelerating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSEPA is urgently responding to ensure Scotland\u2019s communities and businesses are resilient to flooding and adapted to future climate change impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA major part of this is to ensure information on flood risk is available to those who need it most. This means we need to continually improve the quality and availability of our flood map products, with a particular focus on surface water flood risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur significant investment in this project to improve surface water flood hazard mapping for Scotland is one step on the journey to ensure people and businesses are resilient to flooding and adapted to our changing environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Bassett, director of JBA Consulting, added: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be appointed by SEPA to complete the national surface water flood hazard mapping for Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been working on flood risk in Scotland for over 20 years and in that time our technical experts have accrued excellent knowledge of the risk and the issues, and the structures in place to help<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Government<\/a> surface water management planning guidance issued in 2018, highlighted that 23% of annual average damages associated with flooding across Scotland were forecast to come from surface water flooding.
