{"id":98250,"date":"2021-08-24T14:18:22","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T13:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=98250"},"modified":"2021-08-24T14:18:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T13:18:22","slug":"materials-crisis-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/materials-crisis-concerns\/98250\/","title":{"rendered":"Materials crisis temporarily eases but lack of drivers still \u2018major concern\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In a joint statement, John Newcomb, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmf.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Builders Merchants Federation<\/a> and Peter Caplehorn, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionproducts.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Products Association<\/a> said the materials crisis has temporarily eased due to the holiday period and customers delaying or cancelling projects<\/h2>\n<p>The latest statement reveals the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/materials-crisis\/95212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of availability of drivers<\/a> is still impacting the materials crisis, despite some relief from the holiday period and customers delaying or cancelling projects.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018It will be 2022 before prices stabilise\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>They said: \u201cTimber, cement, roofing products, bricks, blocks, insulation, steel and cable management systems remain the products in shortest supply, while global shortages of semi-conductors are a cause for concern in the lighting and appliance sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough product and material price inflation has slowed, indications are that it will be 2022 before prices stabilise, with some manufacturers still to implement double-digit price increases to recover current and future cost inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaulage, however, and the lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/hgv-driver-shortages\/96262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">availability of drivers<\/a>, are now the major concerns affecting distribution with some suppliers asking builders merchants to collect their orders as they cannot get enough drivers to complete deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegional distribution is a particular issue, with some finding challenges arranging deliveries to Scotland and the South West of England.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Concerns for smaller builders\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>They added: \u201cContainer shipping continues to affect imports. Key ports in China are suffering reduced capacity due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid<\/a>, but the backlog extends beyond China throughout distribution centres worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is forecast to continue through the peak Christmas season into early 2022. With capacity at a premium, container prices remain high; however, these rates are not sustainable in the long term and when demand signals change, we are likely to see prices reduce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking forward, the group discussed the requirement for aggregates and other key products when HS2 demand is at its peak in 2022\/23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProjected volumes are being shared with industry trade bodies, key suppliers and the CLC Product Availability Group to help provide greater clarity and confidence about the industry\u2019s ability to deliver HS2 as well as all other projects.
