Gatwick Airport<\/a> has announced plans to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use to enable dual runway operations with the airport\u2019s main runway<\/h2>\n

Gatwick has revealed that a public consultation will start on 9 September 2021 on plans to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use alongside its Main Runway.<\/p>\n

The scheme will generate 18,400 additional jobs by 2038 and an additional expected \u00a31.5bn GVA to the region.<\/p>\n

Despite passenger numbers currently remaining low due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Gatwick is taking its plans for growth forward<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0proposed\u00a0plans\u00a0would\u00a0allow\u00a0Gatwick\u2019s Northern Runway\u00a0to be\u00a0brought\u00a0into routine use,\u00a0for departing aircraft,\u00a0by repositioning its centre line\u00a0further\u00a0north\u00a0by 12 metres.<\/p>\n

The plans would add resilience to Gatwick\u2019s operations (reducing delays and congestion), bring new global connections, and allow an increase in passenger capacity to approximately 75 million passengers per annum by 2038.<\/p>\n

Other elements of the proposals include improved airport access, highway improvements, as well as additional landscape\/ecological planting and environmental mitigation.<\/p>\n

\u2018Unlocking new capacity from existing infrastructure\u2019<\/h3>\n

Stewart Wingate,\u00a0chief executive officer of Gatwick Airport, said:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWhile we are currently experiencing\u00a0low passenger and air traffic volumes\u00a0due to the global\u00a0pandemic<\/a>,\u00a0we are confident that Gatwick will not only fully recover\u00a0to previous passenger levels, but has the potential to\u00a0continue to grow\u00a0back\u00a0into\u00a0one of Europe\u2019s\u00a0premier\u00a0airports.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur plans to bring our existing Northern Runway into routine use will not only help to secure that growth but will also ensure many thousands of additional jobs and a vital boost to the economy for our local region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to hear views from local people and interested groups on the proposed Northern Runway Project as part of our comprehensive public consultation process and encourage everyone to take time to review our plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from the economic benefits our plans will have,\u00a0we remain\u00a0committed to\u00a0our sustainability goals,\u00a0and our Northern Runway plans\u00a0are\u00a0designed to be a low impact way of unlocking new capacity from our existing infrastructure<\/a>, much of which is already in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the proposed Northern Runway plans are considered a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, the airport plans to apply for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to build and operate the scheme.<\/p>\n

Before the application is submitted Gatwick will be running a twelve-week public consultation, for anyone who is interested in reviewing or commenting on the proposals, from 9 September 2021 to 1 December 2021.<\/p>\n
