As\u00a0net zero and the\u00a0low carbon transition hasten,\u00a0fascinating but\u00a0presently\u00a0nascent green tech is going to be in the ascendancy.<\/p>\n

The business logic behind this is rock solid. Legacy approaches to carbon are out and\u00a0it makes sense to take\u00a0legacy technologies off the menu too.<\/p>\n

Replacing them, we need rapid new solutions like IoT smart tech, responsive renewables and intelligently designed building materials<\/a> across our homes and offices.<\/p>\n

Aligning the early adoption of such tech with net zero makes complete sense. As\u00a0we redesign\u00a0older\u00a0infrastructure, like\u00a0our\u00a0electricity grid\u00a0for example, it\u2019s logical\u00a0to redesign the complementary technology within\u00a0our\u00a0buildings\u00a0to a similar timeline.\u00a0So, this is\u00a0our\u00a0brave new world. Beautifully aligned, it will combine green tech, green policy\u00a0and\u00a0greener public infrastructure\u00a0with net zero\u00a0buildings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The undeniable green business agenda<\/h3>\n

These are exciting times because rolling these things out transparently across real estate makes vital business and environmental sense. Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n

We already know the Sixth Carbon Budget has set top-level, binding carbon reduction goals. Working within this policy, early green tech adoption has myriad commercial advantages.<\/p>\n

An obvious one is futureproofing against evolving policy. It\u2019s a fair bet punitive taxes and measures against carbon will strengthen the housing sector as we step towards 2050. EPCs may well become tougher.<\/p>\n

Equally, there is massive environmental and social governance<\/a> (ESG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) wins from getting on the green tech rollercoaster early. Developers will probably have to report more stringently on carbon into the future anyway, but their ESG and CSR reporting can benefit right now from using the most sustainable tech.<\/p>\n

Plus,\u00a0greener\u00a0tech is more modern.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0simply\u00a0better\u00a0by definition\u00a0than legacy options,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0more recently designed, more reliable and more advanced. Costs on sustainable tech are falling and they are only going in one direction; lower.\u00a0All good news for affordable, sustainable buildings.<\/p>\n

Early\u00a0adoption of policy and technology<\/h3>\n

It might seem early\u00a0in the day, but the\u00a0thoughtful\u00a0money might well place\u00a0bets\u00a0on\u00a0greener tech\u00a0swiftly outrunning legacy\u00a0options\u00a0both\u00a0in the housing sector and beyond. Change is coming, whether legacy tech providers and\u00a0users\u00a0like this or not.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, we must ensure we assess all disruptive tech against the right carbon criteria; embodied, operational and organisational, then we can be encouraged that it\u2019s fit for net zero.<\/p>\n

I look forward to the day when every UK building, home and office is packed with sustainable technology, made from the most sustainable materials and plugged into an advanced, responsive,\u00a0intelligent\u00a0infrastructure<\/a> too.<\/p>\n
