A building contractor and a roofing contractor have been fined over \u00a315,000 after an employee fell from a first-floor extension and broke his back<\/h2>\n

Liverpool Magistrates\u2019\u00a0Court heard\u00a0how\u00a0on 11\u00a0June 2018,\u00a0Grayton Building Contractors Ltd\u00a0was\u00a0undertaking a\u00a0first-floor\u00a0extension to a residential bungalow in Noel\u00a0Gate, Aughton.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0employee\u00a0was fitting fascia boards and soffits to allow roofers\u00a0employed by\u00a0Thomas\u00a0Dean, who\u00a0had arrived on site a week early,\u00a0to commence work. Whilst stepping across a gap in the incomplete working platform to descend\u00a0from the roof,\u00a0the\u00a0ladder,\u00a0which was not\u00a0tied, slipped\u00a0sideways,\u00a0causing him to fall.\u00a0As a\u00a0result\u00a0of his injuries, he was unable to work for 8 weeks.<\/p>\n

HSE investigation<\/h3>\n

An investigation by the Health and Safety\u00a0Executive<\/a> (HSE) found that both Grayton Building Contractors Ltd and the roofing contractor Thomas Dean failed to properly plan the work, assess the risks<\/a> and provide appropriate supervision.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the work at height<\/a> equipment selected was not suitable and the work was not carried out safely.<\/p>\n

Grayton Building Contractors pleaded guilty to a breach of Regulation 4 (1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.\u00a0The\u00a0company\u00a0was\u00a0fined \u00a315,000\u00a0and ordered to pay costs of \u00a33,742<\/p>\n

Thomas Dean also pleaded guilty\u00a0to a\u00a0breach of Regulation\u00a04 (1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and was fined \u00a3400\u00a0and ordered to pay costs of \u00a33,000<\/p>\n

Speaking after the hearing, HSE\u00a0inspector Andy McGrory, said: \u201cThe risks from working at height<\/a> are well known. Those in control of the work have a responsibility to devise safe methods of working, which should include ensuring the use of suitable work equipment and adequate supervision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe incident could have easily been prevented with simple precautions including properly planning the work, undertaking a suitable risk assessment and by selecting, erecting and using suitable work at height equipment for the job.\u201d<\/p>\n
