ISG<\/a> has begun enabling works on the Gigaplant site in Cambois, Northumberland which will create around 3,000 direct jobs<\/h2>\n

Britishvolt<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0now instructed ISG to commence\u00a0enabling works on the Gigaplant\u00a0site in\u00a0Cambois, Northumberland.<\/p>\n

The Gigaplant will bring with it around 3,000 direct jobs<\/a> and 5,000 associated jobs in the supply chain.<\/p>\n

\u2018A landmark event for UK manufacturing and the automotive industry\u2019<\/h3>\n

Richard McDonell,\u00a0Britishvolt\u00a0project director, said:\u00a0\u201cToday is a historic day as it marks the start of construction on the UK\u2019s premier\u00a0Gigaplant<\/a>,\u00a0Britishvolt\u202f\u2013\u202fa landmark event for UK manufacturing and the automotive industry on the road to zero.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a pleasure to see our tier one construction partner ISG, and its world-class workforce, commence preliminary works on site ahead of the main construction\u00a0programme, which we anticipate will start in late autumn\/early winter. This initial phase will see the site cleared and preparatory work carried out for the services and infrastructure that will support construction activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is yet another milestone on our journey to building the UK\u2019s first full-scale\u00a0Gigaplant. It\u2019s a boost for UK plc and the real kick-start of the energy transition, of which\u00a0Britishvolt\u00a0batteries will be at the very heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cMain construction will see over 2,500 people involved in the project, a huge positive for the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an exciting announcement and marks the tangible start and progress of the main factory building where we will be producing some of the world\u2019s lowest carbon, sustainable battery cells to help accelerate the transition to a low carbon future<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter Millett,\u00a0high tech\u00a0managing director for ISG\u2019s\u00a0engineering services business, commented:\u00a0\u201cThe positive momentum, passion and\u00a0sense of genuine\u00a0excitement\u00a0that underpins\u00a0this\u00a0nationally important project\u00a0is\u00a0driving the entire team\u00a0forward\u00a0at pace,\u00a0and this significant construction milestone\u00a0demonstrates our collective commitment to\u00a0UK manufacturing and to\u00a0supporting\u00a0communities across Northumberland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the starting point for the transformation\u00a0of a disused site\u00a0in\u00a0Cambois\u00a0with a legacy in\u00a0the industrial past, that from today will\u00a0become a beacon for innovation and advanced manufacturing\u00a0right\u00a0here in the\u00a0North East.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project will be built in phases towards total capacity by the end of 2027 onwards.<\/p>\n

Once at full capacity, the\u00a0Gigaplant\u00a0will have a production capability equating to approximately enough cells for around 300,000 electric vehicle<\/a> battery packs per year, intended primarily for the automotive industry.<\/p>\n

It will be the first\u00a0large full cycle\u00a0Gigaplant\u00a0in the UK.<\/p>\n
